Dr Guy's Articles In Sports & Leisure

Tiger Woods has been called "the Best Athlete" because of his domination of his chosen sport.  He on the other hand says that Michael Schumacher is the best Athlete.  But the thing is Schumacher is a Formula One driver, who is dominating, but some don't think that is a real athlete.  I am in that crowd. Golf is not a demanding, physically, sport, but it sure is mentally.  I guess in that respect, so is race car driving. But I am curious, for the sports aficionados out t...

yes, the longest run of a division champ ever, 14 straight seasons (although the Mets did make it to the series in 2k), is a bit premature.  If they win all their remaining games, and the Mets (the best team in Baseball right now) lose all of theirs, the Braves will win by a game. But that is highly unlikely.  And I love it!  Our home team is the Triple A farm team for them, and I hate them too!  The only good year the Braves had was 69 (they lost to the Mets in 3 straight...

Bob Uecker, the Rodney Dangerfield of baseball, has gotten a restraining order from a lady who he claims (and the court apparently agrees with) has been stalking him!  I had a hard time deciding if this should go under humor, or sports!  Ah, but Sports needs a bump! A woman stalking him?  Has he been dipping into the viagra stash?  LOL! I like Bob.  He is funny and self effacing.  And you cant help but like his antics as he "exalts himself" only to be humbled!...

Well, almost!  And the Mets have the largest lead of any division leader!  But not the best record (only the second best).  That goes to Detroit (I am reminded of 84 83?).  But they have been slowing down and may be back to good from Ouch soon enough.  But the one thing I have noticed is why the Mets are doing so well. Hitting?  Nah!  Just average. HomeRuns? (I love the days of Kingkong Kingman, but they never amounted to any champioiships).  Nah...

Ok, so it is not a SUPER BIG record, but it is one held by the NY Yankees!  Yes, the Mets today set a record for winning the most games in a row on the road by scoring in the First inning! And they right now have the best record in Baseball.  And they have a 9.5 game lead over the second place team in their division!  And yes, this is my second article on the Mets!  But visions of 69 dance in my head! (and 86 - Sorry Bosox Bozos!). 9-1 on a Road Trip!  Now that is ...

Last year, I ate crow and kept quiet.  Why?  The Upstart Nationals, the newest team in baseball was going gung-ho!  They were looking good and doing well.  And my team?  Sucking pig juice as usual.  And so I took some ribbing from the DC JU crowd.  Although the Nationals did not go anywhere, they did do a very respectable showing for their fans.  In time, they may be a real contender. But not this year! No, with the month of April down, the Mets are ...

WOW! With appologies to Bluedev who is in mourning, I have to say the George Mason/Connecticut game was awesome! And the Verizon Arena was rocking in anticipation of an upset! They were not denied. I am not a GMU fan. My team is in their league, and was the highest ranked (81) not to make it into either tournament. Tough cookies. So I am not a GMU fan. Until now! Hell yes! I think the media wants a cinderella team every year, and usually they blow it. Pick one and it loses. It is media hype....

Last night I was getting new Cell phones for my wife and I.  NBD, just new phones (as mine was a wreck and we dont want to have 2 sets of adapters). We do Verizon.  And they are good enough and not BSing me (as I had already researched on the web).  But since we were doing a 2 year contract and plus a $50 rebate, my phone was free.  And so was hers due to the BOGO.  But that is not the story. While waiting for them to transfer the numbers to the new phone, a guy (p...

The Evening Standard in London is reporting that Muhammed Ali is dying and only has months to live.  For the last 20 years, Ali has been suffering from Parkinson's disease. And as a friend said: "The guy has always been a battler and he's been fighting Parkinson's as best he can for years. But this is one match he is going to lose no matter how many rounds he goes." I remember Cascius Clay.  I did not really understand boxing at that time, but when he beat Sonny Liston, tha...

Ralph Sampson, the most celebrated college recruit since Kareem Abdul Jabbar (when he was Lew Alcindor), went to UVA.  I remember those years!  We thought finally!  UVA was going to Beat UNC and win a National Championship! But UNC had something better.  Dean Smith!  One of the greatest coaches of all times! So Ralph did his 4 and then went pro and was a big bust!  He was not bad, but people expected him to be a franchise player and Like Bill Walton, he was a ...

The New Orleans Saints got their name from the Dixieland Song 'When the Saints go Marching in'.  As New Orleans is renown for its Jazz and Dixieland music, it had a nice ring to it (the former Basketball team was the New Orleans Jazz - get the pattern?).  So no one really complained or yelled about it being derogatory to Saints who no longer could defend themselves or speak up for themselves in the press. Since by Definition, you have to be dead to be a saint. Now the NFL is talking...

Seriously, I want to know who has baseball as the number 1 sport on their list!  I use to.  I kept stats on every Baltimore player back in the glory days of Palmer, Cueller, McNally, and Dobson! (the only time a team has had 4 20 game winners!) I still follow it, but I am mostly football now.  So I want to know.  Who is a Baseball fanatic?

Tim Brown, Mr. Raider of the 90s, was resigned for a day so he could retire a Raider.  He holds almost every receiving record on the Raiders nd is one of my all time favorite players as he was was never selfish when it came to glory. Now that he is a retired man of leisure, he is thinking about buying a Nascar team!  If he does, I am going to be rooting for his team all the way.  I have never been interested in watching a bunch of guys (and an occassional girl) run around a tra...

The Big East just extorted a ton of money from the ACC.  Why?  Because 3 members of the conference exercised their right to freely associate with any schools they wanted to and left to Join the ACC. Was that the ACC's fault?  After all, the ACC does not pursue schools to Join.  Schools Petition the conference to Join, and thus many members of the Big East did so, but only 3 were chosen. So the big east sued, and the ACC settled instead of being tied up in court for a lo...

Looks like Va Tech, A first year member of the ACC, is going to skunk 2 great florida teams and UVA to win the title! This year was a tough one in the ACC.  With the addition of Miami and Va Tech, that made 4 great teams and 2 or 3 good teams!  So yea they beat each other up big time!  UVA can never beat a Fla team, and Tech was not good at it.  But it appears that Fla teams have problems with MD and NC teams, and hence the log jam at the top. In the end, Tech beat UVA....
