The first week we lived here there were two carjackings and a home invasion within a mile or two of our house. There were drive-by shootings, gang shootouts and all manner of crimes happening around us. There were still a few random acts occasionally, but the drop off was dramatic and sudden. I understand that other counties have had similar results when carry permits were accessable to the public. I think I left an insightful response at Wise Life

2. The media is not one uniform thing. This, for instance, is part of the media. Every channel is part of the media. Media is, of course, a plural word. So there are certainly liberal biases and there are definitely conservative ones as well. The trouble is in pretending that there are no biases and that all good reporting is non-biased. I think this is foolish. It is in human nature, and human rights, to make a judgment. It is also our responsibility to not wholesale swallow anyone's judgment. As a writer and a Catholic and a liberal, my life has me live with and love people who cannot abide each other and cling to some party line either right or left. What we need is more subtlety and a better understanding of each other. What we need is true love in the old Christian sense of the word; that is: caritas. Charity.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-05T10:49:06</pubDateParsed>
Ennarath on No Liberal Bias in the Press?

The Liberals own the MSm lock, stock and toilet.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-05T10:49:06</pubDateParsed>
Moderateman on No Liberal Bias in the Press?

Yea, and they make good money in the process once people find out they are that dam good.
Apples and oranges, the 70's wage and price controls were all about
controlling inflation through wage and price caps, not an increase. We've been
artificially inflating prices through taxes and tariffs for some time without a
problem.

The recent gas price surge has shown quite conclusively that even a small
increase in gas prices can significantly reduce consumption. It's also proven
that we can adapt very quickly to change our transportation habits. Just in the
last 6 months the use of public transportation, carpooling and demand for more
fuel efficient vehicles has gone up dramatically and truck and SUV sales have
plumited.

Alternative energy is an economic boom just waiting to happen and higher gas
prices are giving it a big kick.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-05T10:49:06</pubDateParsed>
stubbyfinger on Obama - Higher Gas Prices Necessary

I guess we were thinking alike this morning. I wrote an article about Obama's gas fix before I saw this posted.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-05T10:49:06</pubDateParsed>
Locamama on Obama - Higher Gas Prices Necessary

when you try to artificially manipulate the market, you only end up damaging it. This is not an opinion or theory. It is a fact (1970s wage and price controls).

Very true! However, one could also make the argument that the current administration has allowed nearly unprecedented manipulation of the market, by allowing the big banks to regulate and police themselves, thus leading to the biggest swindle in modern history (bigger than the S & L in scope) whereby the banks created fake money through toxic junk bonds based on debt collateral that would never be realized! After that pipe dream went up in smoke (and it did in august of 07 though all the commentators and officials were too scared to come out and say it) the banks then did 2 things:

1) they pleaded with and received a bailout from the fed to the tune of several hundred billion (if that's not artificial market manipulation and 'nanny state economics' please tell me what is!)

2) with the collapse of the derivatives and CDO market and the loss of hundreds of billions (perhaps trillions) in worthless funds that no one will buy to this day (except the fed, of course, again bailing them out) they decided to speculate on

a) food

b) oil

And now these are the two commodities whose prices have skyrocketed quite unnaturally, rising far above any level that would be expected with the current supply and demand. There have been food riots in poorer countries around the globe (although hardly covered at all or only in passing by major news outlets over here) and oil has more than DOUBLED in cost since last year. It's been proven that the massive spike in prices have very little to do with production amounts or market demand pressures... it's the fact that the big banks, desperate for capital after their last debacle (which still isn't over, btw) have decided to try and recoup some of their losses by turning the worlds food and energy markets into a giant poker game where the small blind is enough capital to buy the entire soy harvest of Brazil in one fell swoop!

And of course let's not forget the value of the dollar or how this has afffected inflation!

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-05T10:49:06</pubDateParsed>
Artysim on Obama - Higher Gas Prices Necessary

Please do disagree. It amazes me that he beat Clinton in the primary but it does not in any way lead me to believe that the the dems who voted for him are politically ignorant. I would think it has more to do with his campaign strategists being politically brilliant. Probably not brilliant but in any case to beat the Clintons at their own game is quite an accomplishment. To infer that he has so far not campaigned on anything is incorrect. His website has been full of content with some specifics for most of the race so although most of his campaign speeches were fluff most candidates primary speeches are not very specific or simple attacks on the opponents full of stupid talking points. He didn't beat up his own party during the primary run......not a bad thing. In any case now we will start to see more substance and my guess is he will surprise a lot of people at how adept a politician that he really is. I may be wrong but the fact is we wont really know until Nov.

Hows this for a newsbite from bloomburg:

Three academics -- Austan Goolsbee, 37, a University of Chicago professor and columnist for The New York Times, Jeffrey Liebman, 39, a pension and poverty expert at Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and David Cutler, 41, a Harvard health economist -- form the core of Obama's economic team.

`Top-Notch Economists'

``They're all top-notch economists,'' said Greg Mankiw, a Harvard professor and former chief White House economist for President George W. Bush. ``Their views are left of the political center, as one would expect, but only slightly.''

Amazing that the chief economist from papa Bush's administration has such high praise for the competitions selection of an economists team and states that they are only slightly left of the political center. Hmmm

Remember one simple fact: JFK was even younger when his finger had access to the nuclear button during the Cuban Missile Crisis which has proved to many on both sides of the aisle that some people in their 40's may be considered politically inexperienced but have extremely good judgement when it comes to matters of national security.

I do agree that political campaigns do have a lot to do with telling blocs of voters what they want to hear but McCain's pile of BS is just as deep as Obama's and only time will tell who's ends up being deeper. My prediction is it will be McCains. I say this because I know how well history repeats itself sometimes. Back in the day I voted for Papa Bush and distinctly recall him saying "read my lips". Post war periods usually dictates raising tax revenues so when McCain outlines his economic plan as keeping the tax cuts and adding new cuts for business more than likely all he is doing is making his pile deeper. Keep in mind how badly the reps have stepped on their own toes over the past few years so about the only things McCain would be able to get passed through congress if he gets elected will have to already on the agenda of what will be a democratically controlled house and senate.
