Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.
Published on December 14, 2005 By Dr Guy In Blogging

Locamama recently wrote an article asking asking several questions about why people blog.  http://locamama.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=95055  It is a very revealing article both to others, and to those who took the time to answer the questions.  But one of the question generated a lot of questions itself, and not many answers.

Do you consider yourself to be in with the in crowd on JU?

So what is the "in Crowd" of JU?  I guess we could easily put Brad, Karmagirl, Cordelia, T-Man, and Larry in there as they are the Admins.  But who else belongs in the 'in crowd'?

Before anyone can really answer that, I guess we would have to define what the 'In Crowd' is, and that is the question I am asking here.

What do you consider to be the In crowd.  You can use people, or categories, but I am interested to know what others think is the 'in crowd'.

I consider the ones that are the main bloggers here to be the "In" crowd. Dharma, Whip, Texas, Myrrander, etc.

Am I one? Nope

I used to feel a part of the 'In Crowd' Doc, but lately I feel totally ashamed to be in any way associated with this site. The hatred displayed by certain bloggers has reached new lows. They do not know when to stop their attacks, mostly personal, and are oten encouraged by others to continue with them.
I always felt I could talk to anyone here, regardless of their political opinions, but it has become impossible in the past short while.
You might have noticed my absence, now you know why.

I always figured the "In Crowd" were the ones that blogged with a great deal of consistency, that is to say usually everyday
or at least put in an appearance regularly.
So that would have to include at least the first 20 or so bloggers that are on the "lists".

But how can you leave anyone out? especially when some blog just once in awhile, yet are loved by the
crowd?

Maybe not, but you are one of my favorites!  And unfortunately, unless you have switched jobs, your "Christmas" season is coming up in a month.  Which means even fewer articles!

Mano,

I have a response for you, but it's off topic. I guess I'll respond to your blog after all.

Frankly, I don't think there IS an "in crowd". If there WAS one, I'd know it, because I'd be IN it. I have a high percentage of featured articles, am a perennial top ten blogger (with a top ten blog site), and am ranked as an elite. But that's based on the substance of my writing, not any "connection" I may or may not have had.

There are no secret handshakes, secret email lists, or secret clubs of any of the top ranked members. I have had regular email contact with fewer than ten people on this site, phone contact with one, and face to face contact with none (but with the family of one, to say the least).

The trick to exposure on JU is really no trick at all: I have explained it repeatedly. If you look at my profile, you'll notice that I have about 4 times as many article replies as I have articles. This is no accident, but a ratio I've deliberately maintained as a minimum since I began blogging on this site. To drum up readers, simply visit other bloggers, read their comments and respond insightfully, and they'll come to your site. You give 'em a little and leave 'em wanting more.

I would hope that we are not all judged by the actions of a few.  To me, that is very prejudicial.  There is still a large majority here who do not take part in that kind of stuff.  You might want to check out the link for some great responses and questions on Locamama's blog.

And you as well!  The top 20 are ones that generate a lot of heat, but some of the ones not in the top 20 blog regularly as well.

I dont know how to include or not include anyone, and that is why I was asking the question.  I was curious as to how others defined it.

I had actually never thought of it until reading Locamama's blog about it.

No, and I dont think that is what Locamama meant, nor is it the real question I was asking.  It is not a formal club, but I guess some people have a perception there is one.  So I was curious as to what their perceptions of the in crowd was.

Gid, I am sorry you felt the way you did about what I wrote, I deleted the article out of respect for you and the others here that I hold in high esteem.

I am not judging Doc, all I am saying is that a few, less than a handful, have been acting very negatively lately. The forums are full of their venom and all that is doing is getting others to leave, to close comments, even to get exiled when getting into debates with these few.

Actually, I have switched. Guess I forgot to mention that. Hee hee. I am now a secretary for the Davis Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. I even maintain our website! I really like it here, and now I don't have to worry about the "Christmas" seasons.

I guess to me the in crowd means the active regulars. I think that when I first came to the site it seemed like everyone knew everyone else and I felt like an outsider. I feel like I'm part of the group now, not an outsider anymore. I think there are "cliques" certain people who stick up for each other if they think someone is being unfair etc.

Congratulations on your new job!  Now you can be like the rest of us, and just hate the season for having to do the taxes for yourself!

I would say you are mostly right on this, however, on the knowing part, only what we chose to share.  Most of us do not have contact outside of JU, so we really dont "know" one another.  And yes, kind of like all communities, there are 'cliques'.  They are semi fluid, but some have a core that never changes.
