Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.
Published on November 25, 2005 By Dr Guy In Current Events

Recently we had someone, in the heat of debate, deride the US Military as a bunch of ignorant in-brreds with less IQ than teeth.  That person pretty much was slammed down by both the left and right citizens of JU.

We have a fair number of serving military and Vets here on JU.  SO I would say that JU has a pretty good cross section of the Military.  No one would say that Adrian is Conservative, and others like Greywar are definitely not liberal.

Last weekend, my wife and I took my son to see a movie.  As is the usual procedure, she went to get the popcorn, while I bought the drinks.  My line was shorter, so I joined her.  She was talking to a man, who said he was a US Marshal, and Vet.  And he was fluent in Spanish and Russian!

That got me to thinking of all the Military here on JU and what they know!  And I am very much impressed!  The langauages run the gamut from the normal (Spanish - French), to the exotic (Korena, Farsi, Chinese).  Ands the skills are as equally impressive!

That is not to say they popped out of the womb speaking these languages and skills, and most have clearly stated that they learned them in the Military.  But that in itself says a lot.  Since going to a language immersion class is not for 'dummies'!

It is evident that the "dumb grunt" days of the US military are far past.  Today, almost without exception, GIs are learning skills and talents above and beyond how to field strip an M1.  And that takes intelligence to learn!

I am truly impressed with today's military and the Veterans thereof.  And it makes me proud that so many smart people are volunteering to serve their countries first, instead of making a milion bucks on the open market.

Well done.

Haha. Adrian's far more conservative than I am.

This is a nice piece, though, Dr.Guy.

The military isn't going to waste thousands upon thousands of dollars training an idiot who is not going to be able to perform his duties. At the same time, those duties run a wide range, and there are military doctors and lawyers and veterinarians and ordinance disposal guys and cooks and mechanics and everything else...and those jobs require different levels of ability and intelligence. The military is very diverse in that way.

Thanks Tex.  I really dont know if Adrian is conservative or liberal, just that he thinks Bush is an "attthhh Hooole'!

But having seen the articles by so many here at JU and talking to so many military (State Government is full of ex-military!), I am really impressed!  Especially that US Marshall.  The fact that he is 6'6" had nothing to do with it!  But I at least knew not to call him Sir. (NCO)

Thanks for the write-up, Doc. It's true that the image of the dumb grunt is a misleading one; if you run into any infantry-men who have even a little success at what they do, you will find them to be pretty clever. They have to know a lot of stuff to do their jobs. Unfortunately, the idiots in today's milititary are usually found in the clerking jobs. The guys who handle our pay and personnel records. Hooray for us.

Guess the military is like the Civilian sector in that regard!

Great article Dr. Guy!

It reminded me of my last position in the Wisconsin National Guard. I was the Communications Cheif for the Tactical Operations Center of the 1/121st Field Artillery Rgt.

I had 5 guys working for me. They were all college students when they weren't running radios and computers with me. 2 computer science majors, an electrical engineer major, and two general ed freshmen.

Now, for a National Guardsman, I held a standard closer to active duty than most. Although I didn't insist on it, even most of those who outranked me called me Sergeant. I made sure I was the last to eat and sleep, but first to wake in my section. My troops knew that I expected a lot from them, but even more from myself.

Part of that insistance (although I'd never admit it to them) was that I often felt like I had to measure up to those I was assigned to lead.

They were great guys!!! Not a stereo typical "mindless automaton" among them. Over my years, I did know a few troops who were the embodiment of the negative stereotype... they never did amount to very good soldiers.

Like HW said, the only eejits I know work in accounting and finance.

Seriously, I don't know of any REAL idiots of half wits in the military.

I told Dave about what had been said and he said "yeah, I'm sure that all the people I've arrested in the past have thought I was stupid too. Yep, I'm just a dumb cop....that's why they're in jail or out of service. 'Cause I'm just a dumb cop, yanno."

He's got a point.

Ouch!  damn!  I know that was tough!  I try to do that with a bunch of ECPI wannabees (and that is not really hard!).  But as you guys (except for the admin grunts as someone pointed out) need to stay on top, that makes you very much in demand on the outside, at least in my book!  I am very impressed with what the new military is.  I thought my job was tough (40 hours per week OTJ, and 20 hours per week learning on my own).  I see that that is SOP for you guys and gals!

He is also the new Military!  And the Civvies can learn from him!  As we can from all the military!  The eejits never will!  Thankfully.

Whew!! I'm glad you're on the good side of the military!!!

*chest popping out just a bit* My son is going to be commissioned as a Lt in the Air Force upon grauation from VMI.......and he's Mechanical Engineering...so no dummy. He's hoping to get into aeronical and someday be an astronaut. But that's a loooooong ways away.....he's still a baby!!

He's not supposed to write on JU cuz it's against the rules to say anything about what goes on inside. One kid got in trouble with the admin......

Thanks for the uplifting words for our military.

I am very impressed!  I spoke German and French at one time, and could and can understand Spanish (if you speek it slooooowly).  But those days are long gone (besides, German is easy and if you learn French, so is Spanish).

Not only did I learn Korean in the Army, but I finished my Bachelor of Arts through an Army program.
And halfway to my Masters degree too. Thank you Army.
Through the GI Bill I will finish grad school and also continue to get a Doctorate, if I have the intestinal fortitude. The money is already there, and I intend to use it. I could get tested in Spanish and any other language I care to try, too...

I have also met like-minded, driven people who constantly strive for self-improvement in the Army. Both in advanced degrees and certificates of professional excellence.

Not trying to toot my own horn, but tell me the best and the brightest stay away from the military.

I am also very impressed!  Thank you for doing what youi have done!

I would love to concur with HW that military idiots are confined to the clerical disciplines but that just aint the case. The unfortunate fact is that the military runs the gamut of intelligence much as any other career field but the morons are the ones that like to talk to demonstrators and the press...
