Fly Fishing
Published on July 19, 2006 By Dr Guy In Blogging

Did the title perplex you or make you go "OMG!  I have not heard that in a bazillion years!".  Yea it is an old saying from when I was young.  It means that we hooked a live one and are playing with it.

But this is about Fly Fishing!  While not my favorite type of fishing, it holds tons of enjoyment.  Why?

How many of you are fly fishers?  Do you know what that means?  You take some string (I guess you can take a fly, but I have never actually gotten one to stay on a hook), and you make it look like a fly.  Why?  To fool the fish!  And if your fly is good enough, it does!  You use a little deception and a little art, and you got them!

They are yours for life!  You can play with them all you want!  But mostly you land them take a picture and throw them back.  Why?  So you can prove your mastery of the stupid fish! (actually not really stupid, but very canny).  Fly fishing is the ultimate man against fish fishing.  While that may sound like a dumb analogy, it is very apt.  For we are not aquatic, and fish are not land based.

My Grandfather taught me fly fishing.  So I do love the sport.  And I have met many a fish that is embarrassed to have fallen for a piece of string!  Yet dangle that string in the water, and you will get one every time.  Especially if they are myopic!

or you tie your bait right!

I've never done any flyfishing,  however lots of fishing with a cane pole and a can of worms and dad to bait the hook for me

I couldn't stand to touch those icky things, ..   now minnows don't bother me, nor the fish themselves.

Fly fishing is an art and I loved that movie " A River Runs Through It"!  It looks like it would be fun to do  too.

I'm going fishing at the end of the month,  gonna spend a couple of hours on a pontoon.  Who knows, maybe I"ll land my first Northern!!

Yea, and a bit more.  You have to know how to make the flys.  And then what fish you are going after.  Once you know those 2 things, it is really fun!

I've tried it. Give me a good old fashioned rod and reel with a bucket of worms and I'm good to go.

As a kid we used cane poles,  then got Zebco rods when we were older.  ,  dad made us go back to cane poles after a few mishaps.

One of my best rods was a cane pole.  Unfortuantely, I busted it one day trying to land a large bass.

It is good for a day, but I dont like doing it all the time. Still, when you get the attention of the fish, you can play with them all day long, and they will never wise up.

well...I've used fishing rods, cane poles, with worms, minnows, lures,  and watched as the fish jumped all around me and I didn't catch a one!  Dang fish!  maybe I chose the wrong time of day!  or season?

Never tried it.
But I have sat under the shade of an ancient mesquite with stink bait on a treble hook hunting catfish. Did ja know you can get drunker 'n hell doin' that?

I'm not a fan of it. I just can't seem to get the action right and end up with massive tangles and knots up and down the line. But that was years ago. I sure appreciate the art of it, though. Like a number of others here, I prefer good bait, a rod and reel, a nice shady patch and a healthy amount of liquid refreshments. Oh yeah, and some sort of body of water. Hell, gotta make it at least look like I'm fishin'.

I would like to see the pictures.  The Biggest Cat I caught was only a couple of pounds.  But they are fighters!

YES! they're fun to catch, I caught a bass onetime and got sooo execited! It fought like the dickens, then when I saw some of the trophy bass on the wall of the resort I realized mine was just a baby it was too late so we took it home and cooked it up.
