Fly Fishing
Published on July 19, 2006 By Dr Guy In Blogging

Did the title perplex you or make you go "OMG!  I have not heard that in a bazillion years!".  Yea it is an old saying from when I was young.  It means that we hooked a live one and are playing with it.

But this is about Fly Fishing!  While not my favorite type of fishing, it holds tons of enjoyment.  Why?

How many of you are fly fishers?  Do you know what that means?  You take some string (I guess you can take a fly, but I have never actually gotten one to stay on a hook), and you make it look like a fly.  Why?  To fool the fish!  And if your fly is good enough, it does!  You use a little deception and a little art, and you got them!

They are yours for life!  You can play with them all you want!  But mostly you land them take a picture and throw them back.  Why?  So you can prove your mastery of the stupid fish! (actually not really stupid, but very canny).  Fly fishing is the ultimate man against fish fishing.  While that may sound like a dumb analogy, it is very apt.  For we are not aquatic, and fish are not land based.

My Grandfather taught me fly fishing.  So I do love the sport.  And I have met many a fish that is embarrassed to have fallen for a piece of string!  Yet dangle that string in the water, and you will get one every time.  Especially if they are myopic!

or you tie your bait right!

I've tried it. Give me a good old fashioned rod and reel with a bucket of worms and I'm good to go.

As a kid we used cane poles, then got Zebco rods when we were older. , dad made us go back to cane poles after a few mishaps.

Oh yeah, I love fishing with a nice cane pole. There's something so basic about it. Nothing like hauling in a whopper catfish on a long cane.

My favorite is still shark fishing. Nothing else quite like it.

I've never tried fishing for sharks! holy cow!

My brother-in-law took my dad out fishing on a big boat, on the Pacific Ocean, and he got sick! My dad did just fine although they didn't catch any that day. It was a rainy, gray day with lots of high waves.

I remember my uncle Darwin using leeches, however my dad only used worms and minnows.

Our standard mait for fishing in Florida is shrimp. The nice thing about that is if you don't use all the bait you can cook it up and eat it.

Chicken or live mullet is best for sharks.

Out in the bay (and no you dont use fly fishing out there) they use blood worms. What are Blood worms? Leeches that are not so fat, and have teeth! Actually worms that do suck blood.

My dad was an expert fly fisherman. He tied his own flies for many years and was always on the lookout for new materials.

I wish that he could have shown my boys how to fly fish.
