The first time we heard this phrase was when Saddam was strutting around Kuwait. This article and the linked one are not about Iraq. Instead, they are about the next potential Supreme Court Justice nominee.
In the article, the authors opine that perhaps the next resignation will be Justice Stevens. They call him the most liberal. That may be, but I still think Ginsberg is the most liberal. But that is not really important as I don't think anyone will deny that he is definitely one of the most liberal Justices on the court. And he has made it known that he wants a Republican President to appoint his replacement since a Republican (Ford) appointed him. Since he is now 85, about the only way to ensure that is to resign in the next 2 years. And should that happen, the wailing, gnashing of teeth, and rending of clothes we have just witnessed by the loony left fringe, and some members of the senate will look like a pop gun in comparison to what will happen.
For although many called Justice Sandra Day O'Connor "THE" swing vote, the truth is she was but one of 2, the other being Wishy Washy Kennedy. He is still on the court and now the sole centrist Justice. For Bush to replace Stevens with a conservative jurist would tilt the court solidly to the right. And that the loons on the left fringe, along with about 20 or so senators, will go absolutely nuts over!
If the democrats pick up some seats in the senate at the next election, something they are salivating over now, then the threat of the nuclear option is in essence off the table. If they do not pick up any seats, then the threat is still real, although the deal will have expired (it does not mean another deal cannot be struck). If they lose seats, then the nuclear option probably will not be needed.
But in any case, they are not going to allow even the most qualified Jurist on the supreme court if they are not an avowed liberal. Or so they and their fringe hope.
No one except Justice Stevens knows his plans. But should they be borne out like the assumption of the article, and he does resign soon, we are going to be in for one hell of a treat! And the true frothing at the mouth of the loony left fringe will be a sight to behold. In the words of Bachman Turner Overdrive: You aint see nothing yet!
