Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.
Published on December 22, 2005 By Dr Guy In Entertainment

Over the past couple of days, several bloggers here about have royally trashed Kenny G.  Almost to the point of hanging him in effigy.

Am I weird?  I personally find his music very soothing and relaxing (I dont want to listen to it 24x7, but elected songs now and then sure are nice).

Am I the only one that likes Kenny G?  And if you dont like him, what dont you like about him?

Inquiring fans want to know!

His music is boring and lifeless. Plastic.

Did I mention it's boring?

I happen to enjoy jazz and some new wave ambient. There was a time when I thought Kenny G's music was very good. One day last week, the radio station I listen to on my trips to and from work (jazz to re-focus the stressed mind), came back from a brief commercial with a Kenny G tune and I found myself thinking "blech" and changed the station for a few mins.

I agree with you however, Dr. Guy. His music once in awhile and at the right time is a welcome thang. Not 24-7 either. But I also agree with some of the other posters on your blog, that if KG picked up a new twist in his style, folks might stop and listen again.

I've listened to Yanni and I'm not extremely impressed. That's not to say he isn't good. My folks saw him in concert (having never heard of him - tickets were a gift), and they fell in love with his music style.

Style may be good but he's another that I couldn't listen to "often."

As all things change, so does style whether it be fashion or music or attitude, etc.

I guess that is 1/2 for and 1/2 against!  I agree he needs to get some variety, but an occassional song is very soothing.  I also like New Age (Enya and Loreena McKinnit), but that is vocal, not instrumental.  I love a good symphony, but not Opera.

'AH! The truth comes out! I love the sax! I guess that is why I like him!'

I don't think that cuts it, Dr. Guy. I love the sax too, but the sax I love is that of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter, Clarence Clemens, Sidney Bechet, Michael Brecker, Louis Jordan ... definitely NOT Kenny G.

Put another way, Kenny G is to the saxophone what ...
Richard Clayderman is to the piano
LaToya Jackson is to the Jackson family's musical legacy
4 Non Blondes are to protest music
Richard Marx is to vocal angst
Vanilla Ice is to hip hop
Michael Bolton is to the memory of Otis Redding
Britney Spears is to Thespianism

i.e. demanding nothing and giving less, vacuous, soulless, hollow, empty, and making 'elevator music' seem truly raw, exciting and heartfelt by comparison.

Does that help?

Strictly speaking so does Loreena, but that is not what they are known for or sells.
