Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

Ziggystyles made a comment on a thread that since he and another blogger use the same IP address, and since that blogger is blacklisted on some threads, he is as well.  Is the blacklist based upon IP address or JU User name?  I blog from a couple of IP addresses and was just wondering about that (when I am blacklisted, I dont check from both places).

Or maybe Danny can answer this one too!

Or it could be because Ziggy is blacklisted too. Last I checked blacklisting was based on your logged in name. If you log out you can post comments on a blog you're blacklisted from provided they allow anonymous comments.

I'm pretty sure it's Login based, not IP based.

I think the IP only counts if the user is completely banned from the site. I have had people that I blacklisted post as anonymous users, so I think anyone can post as long as they log out, unless the site admins blacklist their IP addresses. Then I guess it still doesn't matter much if they have a dynamic IP like 99% of the people in the world.

I dunno, but I blacklisted someone a long time ago, and then their wife wrote an article about why I would have blacklisted her (which I didn't but assumed it had something to do with blacklisting him). I removed him and she could comment again.

Strange, but too technical for me to really be concerned with it...

That's what I thought.  But he said he was not BL, and Marcie was, and he still could not post, so I was curious.

Actually, that is closer to about 50/50 now.  And if I remember something that Karma said, they not only look at the IP, but the subnet (cause Dialup users could then sneak around it).  But I know Ziggy and Marcie have broadband cause of an article they wrote once about making ends meet.

being a geek, I like the technical!  But it appears they may use both.  So that even tho I post from 2 different domains (actually 3 - I am a geek), they see my name, and that is banned.  But I wonder if my wife created an account, would she be banned from all IPs as well?

I was wondering about this myself as my son and I have individual IP addresses assigned by the router, however since the router
is connected to the internet, the internet thinks we share the same IP address.

He tried to give me an insightful one night and it wouldn't work.

Yea, you are actually going out on a single IP address. (you can buy a second one from the ISP, but why pay $10/mn when a gateway router provides security AND unlimited (well 256) addresses for about $50?

So yea, a corollary Question.  Does the insightfuls also depend upon IP?  Curiouser and curiouser.

We pay $25.00 a month, through my phone company, for 128K DSL and have one IP address from our ISP. We're unsure
about our router, it's a netgear router.

I got this one.

I am BL'd from Marcie. (She won't even rebutt what I have to say ... Guess she is a bit like Lucas ... She'll take it as long as it's coming from the top of JU) So in theory, if I go home and log on with that IP addy an d my wife's ID then I shouldn't be able to comment in Ziggy's world. (Both sites Work and Home have Static IP's and I can comment with her ID and not with mine) Wrong!

If Marcie is BL'd and Ziggy logs on, he can comment as long as he uses his ID. Of course this would require him to actually pay attention and that may be a problem.

One more point, when the site is acking a little wonky, I have had some incomplete page loads.

It does NAT - Network Address translation.  So your actual computer address is something like 192.168.0.2 and his is 192.168.0.3.  But these are private (i.e. not legal) internet addresses, so the router changes that to a legal one based upon what the internet has assigned them (something like 142.68.10.2).  So all the computers go to internet sites with that number (they really dont know your private internet address).  So to JoeUser, it is the same address.

really quite simple!  And has saved the internet from being over subscribed for about 5 years now!

On the last, yea! On the former, it could be, but a couple of people have related similar stories.  JU could be using a dual prong system.  That is why i am curious.

Black listing is based on account.
