Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

Blue Dev recently had an article on health care.  He asked the question "Just because we can, does that mean we should?". http://bluedev.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=94612 And after a few comments traded back and forth, I came to agree with him some what, with the big exception that I would never want to be the one making the decision.

Now comes a report from Jolly old England, where the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence is telling their version of Health care that perhaps the Smokers, Drinkers, or Obese should not receive treatment since "they brought it upon themselves".

While I agree that smokers know the risks and should accept the responsibility of their actions, the same is not always true with Obese (the definition of which is constantly changing), and many people have opined, or theorized or just plain stated that Alcoholism is a disease, not a choice.

I find it very disturbing that someone, not knowing me from Adam, is going to make a decision based upon what?  Lung cancer?  Non Smokers get it.  Cirrhosis of the Liver?  It can be caused by some diseases.  Obesity?  Many people with thyroid problems are over weight, not by choice.

That they are even discussing it is disturbing.  For while they pick those 3 items out now, what is the next step?  The clearly state that treatment should not be denied based upon age.  For now.  But what is to prevent them from denying it is the future?  After all, age is something almost everyone suffers from eventually, and it is self inflicted (some just kill themselves before it gets too progressed - so are they now the good patients?).

This is a very bad idea, and one of the prime reasons I do not like socialized Medicine.  For when the government takes it over, health care stops being unlimited, and starts being budgeted.  And so, as to not exceed the budget, some in England are talking about rationing it.  Like all government programs.

Today, smoke, drink and eat, and you lose health care.  Tomorrow, sky dive?  Sorry, your life style is too risky.  You are no longer covered.  What a brave new world we are creating for ourselves.

I think sky divers should have cheaper health care.

Why? They don't pay a risk tax as smokers do.

Let the record show that deaths by Skydiving is so rare that it still makes the news when it happens!!! On Fort Bragg, NC, over 150,000 jumps are made every year. I was on Bragg for 6 years... only 10 people died during that time. SO Put That In Your Chute and Jump It!! ;~D

Now, back to the topic...

I've long wondered when "They brought it on themselves" would make the leap from the mouths of the small minded to the policies of our providers of health care coverage. After all, why should everyone have to pay for the mistakes of others?

Except we ALL have done things that have cost lives. If the CDC announced that a disease was killing 125 a day in the U.S. there would be a demand to find a "cure"; Coast To Coast AM would become the #1 radio show of any time slot over night; and there would be talk about setting up "quarantines" to squelch the spread of that dreaded disease... Yet that is the average daily body count on the roads and highways of the U.S. Should we not treat MVA vicims because, they knew the risks and hopped in a car anyway?

I've been close to death a couple of times. The second time was a bug called "Camphylobator". Before antibiotics, if a person picked up these little dudes, they weren't going to be a person much longer. Do you know how you pick up this (not so) sweet hichhiker? By eating chicken that isn't cooked completely. I guess we need to deny medical care to people who eat chicken!! ;~D

I guess it is what floats your boat!  You aren't going to see me jumping out of an airplane!

That is actually a better example than sky diving.  I just picked something I never would do!

Oh they'd have a heyday with me........
Sarcoidosis of the liver: no known cause~seen in primarily Irish people, and health care workers~which I am and was both.
Former smoker~ what will they do with me?
Overweight~ some of it won't come off until or unless I give up my blood pressure pills....Yikes!
