Andrew Sullivan, former editor of the New Republic (and no friend of the current administration) thinks that Sen Joe Lieberman's latest speeches and editoritals on Iraq are a precursor for the Administration asking him to become the Secretary Of Defense after Don Rumsfeld resigns.
I dont know if there is any truth to the rumor, but I for one would love to see him take the job if offered. Alone among the senate Democrats, Lieberman has been a harsh critic of many of Bush's policies, but he has not made it personal. And indeed, he is one of the few very hawkish democrat senators when it comes to Iraq. He also seems to be the most honest. And finally, as we saw last year, he stands no chance of getting his parties nomination for the Oval Office.
Stranger things have happened, and I guess it is only a matter of time before we know for sure. The democrats would not be afraid of losing his seat since a democrat almost assuredly would be named to replace him until the election (he is up for Re-election in 06). And unless there is a severe handicap, senators are usually more than kind to their own when nominated for the courts or higher offices. And the Republicans? As one said "I think we should trade a republican senator and 2 candidates to be named later for Joe Lieberman".
That sounds like a pretty good endorsement to me!
