U.S. Secretary of State William Seward agreed to purchase Alaska from the Russian government for $7.2 million in 1967 – a purchase later approved by the Senate in the form of a treaty and signed by President Andrew Johnson. But while the purchase theoretically improved U.S. trade access to the Pacific northern rim, America had other, more pressing issues for years to come.
