Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

Camden NJ is again topping the list.  That in itself is nor surprising, nor is most of the top 10 that made the list.  Sad to say, Richmond, Virginia was among them.  In fact most of the top 10 are not new to the list.  Instead of just tracking murders, however, it also tracks other violent crimes to come up with its rankings.

I was a bit surprised to see New Orleans on the list since according to this story, they only recently suffered their first murder since Katrina: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/N/NEW_ORLEANS_FIRST_KILLING?SITE=VARIT&SECTION=US&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

But almost at the bottom of the article, after extolling the virtues of some of the efforts Camden has made to get rid of the notoriety (and with some success according to the article), so we read that the statistics are not for this year, or even part of this year, but for last year (it is based on incidents per 100,000 population).

I am sure that New Orleans will disappear from the list next year, if only because Katrina did kind of cool off the big Easy.  But Richmond also has some reason to hope.  The Old Police Commissioner was less than effective, and after making strides in the past, the city did back slide under that commissioner.  But the new Mayor cleaned house and brought in a new Police Chief that from all reports so far, is having an impact as well.

The final report on the new Commissioner, as well as the reforms going on in Camden, will only be told when th results are in.  While I dont see Camden disappearing from the list in a year, a lower ranking sure would be welcome.  But I do hope to see Richmond and New Orleans disappear.  That may be a pipe dream, but as I have seen, an effective leadership in Richmond does pay off.

As for the Former Mayor of Richmond?  The one immediately preceding Doug Wilder was useless, but that has less to do him personally than the fact that the City Council was a do nothing, but preen for the cameras outfit.  It still is (for those not under arrest at least).  I hope Douglas Wilder cleans it up.  The city desperately needs strong leadership, and for the first time since I moved to the area, they seem to have gotten it.

Look for the new report in one year.

This just makes me nervous to some degree. My son about ready to start his new Ph.d program at Tulane got quickly ushered out of his new city only to find himself in Richmond for the semester until Tulane opens up in January. Two of the worst cities in the USA. Guess I should be thankful he's not in Camden.

UofR is not in downtown richmond.  It is in the pricey west end.  As long as he stays out there, he should have no problems.  Other than a bunch of effete snobs thumbing their nose at him!

Virginia is kind of unique in that Cities are not part of Counties.  So the surrounding counties are actually great places to live.  Just stay out of the City proper.

I would venture a guess that Richmond can only get better, what with 3 new employees there to guide the city!

Ridding the cities, towns, and country period of meth labs would help alot with reducing the crime rate.

2nd and 4th places went to Michigan cities...which neither of the two shocked me.

I was actually amazed that Richmond wasn't higher in rank.  I always thought Richmond was worse than Flint.

Actually, Richmond is a way station for the drug trade.  About mid-way up and down the eastern seaboard.  So yes, most of the killings are drug related.  But not the ones wanting a fix, the ones who are fighting over turf.

It placed second one year, and then started to improve.  But the last mayor and Police Chief were just wastes.  While the murder rate has not gotten better yet (they have only been on the job 10 months), the Arrest rate for murders is WAY up.  I expect some improvement next year (since that will be based on 2005) and dropping out altogether in the 2006 rankings.

Simon recently put an application in with a company in Houston.

A girl can always hope.

Houston is bad, too...right? I was there once for about a week--I'm not sure. You were and OTR trucker with your ex...have you been there before?

My Sister makes a run from Mt. Airy NC to Houston every week.  She is glad to get out of there.  However if you know what Mt. Airy is, then you know why.  She does not like big cities.

However, I was going for Houston in the Series!  Just liked them more than the Chisox.

I'm not a big city person either. I had to DRIVE in Houston, too, so maybe that's why I had a poor reaction to it. I don't remember if I ever felt unsafe...I was very intimidated so I stuck close to my family while I was there.

Maybe S likes big cities? I "envision" her as more of a small town type of gal, but who knows? I was just wondering if she'd been there before.

Maybe S likes big cities?

I think she says she is from the Kentucky hollers.  So it may just be an acquired taste.
