John Lee, the owner of a Restaurant called the Hawaiin Grill, bought an ad in a School Newspaper, The Scroll, at Sunset High School in Oregon. Sounds like run of the mill stuff, right?
Then why am I writing this?
After it ran in one issue, the school cancelled the ad. Why? Because they thought it was racist. So what was this 'racist' ad?
But that logo, which depicts an Asian man waving an "OK" sign, is now at the center of a conflict between Lee and Sunset High School's student-run newspaper.
Ok, so who is making fun of asians! How dare they! What is this logo?
When John Lee designed the logo for his Cedar Mill restaurant, he opted for an illustrated cartoon he thought resembled himself: a Korean man.
Yep! A Korean born American (he came to the US when he was 10) cannot run an ad with a cartoon image of himself!
I feel real sad for those students and advisers when they think a man's picture is racist. He may not be the most handsome man in the world, but he is not ashamed of the looks god gave him. Why should anyone else be? Unless they are closet racists?
