Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

Several days ago I wrote about the loons in Iran and their call for the extinction of Israel.  Today I come with much, much better news!  While no countries, to my knowledge, have come out in support of Iran, many, including most Arab countries, have been silent on it.  Neither supporting or denying the call.

But there is one notable exception.  Palestine.

The comments were even criticized by Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat .

"We have recognized the state of Israel and we are pursuing a peace process with Israel, and ... we do not accept the statements of the president of Iran," Erekat said. "This is unacceptable."

I have heard people say that there is no hope for peace between Palestinians and Israel until one is completely erradicated.  While peace is not on the horizon yet, this statement goes a very long way to show me that a peaceful coexistance between Israel and a Palestinian state is not only a wishful thought, but perhaps a foreseeable reality.

Let us all hope that there are more leaders like Erekat and a lof fewer like Ahmadinejad.

This is indeed good news.

Iran since the revolution has always had a rather weird relationship with Israel and the Arab world. In contrast to the Palestinians Iran has no actual reason to be hostile to Israel (other than that the mullahs hate Jews).

And to be fair, many moderate Arab states like Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain probably didn't say anything because a) what they say is not very important, they don't want this particular angle of the conflict to escalate, and c) they are too close to Iran for comfort, had been subject to Iranian influence (up to Iranian help for Bahraini rebels!), and are possible targets of the Iranian nuclear weapon program just as Iraq and Israel/Palestine are.

Saudi Arabia is quiete because nobody wants a battle between the two branches of Muslim fundamentalism.

Jordan is quiet because Jordan is always quiet.

Iraq is quiet because Iraq has other problems at the moment (and is already fighting Iranian influence!).

Syria is quiet because Syria is shocked about the idiocy of its ally.

Egypt is quiet because Egypt enjoys a good conflict it can use to prove its stability.

Palestine is loud because it gives them a chance to demonstrate that they are more civilised than the nutcases in Iran and to pretend/show that they are on the good side of the greater conflict (I don't know yet whether they are).

Interesting analysis of each country.  I am not sure I agree with them all (like Egypt), but can see Syria ready to try another assassination!

Which would not be all bad.
