Yale has decided not to renew David Graeber's contract. The man is a recognized expert in his field, but he does hold some very extreme left wing views (being a member of the Industrial Workers of the World is a dead give away).
He claims he is being fired (actually, his contract is not being renewed. There is a difference) for his left wing views, and some may agree with him on that, altho Yale claims otherwise. And his views, while extreme, are definitely not the most extremist out in Academia (Dershowitz and Churchill readily spring to mind). So is it really his views he is being let go for?
Or perhaps it is his non-political views?
He wears cargo pants to class and is not shy about his disdain for the tenured Yale faculty who showed him the door.
"I'm both more productive intellectually than they are and I'm having more fun. It must drive them crazy," he said. Later, he added: "I'm publishing like crazy. I'm all over the place. I try hard not to rub it in."
The professors he holds in contempt may or may not be his equal, but one thing is for sure. They have egos. And when you start slamming them, their egos will bleed.
Graeber's lame attempt to justify his disdain for his colleagues shows that indeed, he has the tact of a rock. Something we see all too often with College professors. But this time, his lack of tact did not enrage the public, but his own colleagues.
Hint for the Prima Dona's of Academia: When you are not in, keep your mouth shut until you are in. Then you can be an arsehole.
