Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

Subway is under fire for a new ad campaign.  In it they promote their Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich with the following line:

"France and chicken, somehow it just goes together"

The ad also pictures a chicken dressed as Napolean (who was not French by the way).

An amusing ad, but of course one that cannot go unchallenged!  And so it was not.  But the challenges are almost as funny as the Ad!

by members of the French expatriate community and other customers offended by the racist undertone.

Racist?  French is a race?  Last census I filled out did not allow French as a race category!

"Saying that the French are dirty or cowards is a little bit like saying the sky is blue. Nobody is going to contest it," said Denis Chazelle, a long-time French resident of the Washington area who created a website in March to try and dispell misconceptions about his native country and who led the campaign against the Subway ads.

Well, at least some of them can laugh at themselves, for the sky really is blue!

"But if it concerns the French, it's no big deal," he said. "People here can say they hate the French without blinking an eye or an afterthought."

This is very true.  No one thinks it is a big deal to carp on cowards or ne'er do wells either.

"There is a kind of anti-French streak in the background of the culture of America," he (Marc Saint-Aubin du Cormier) told AFP.

Funny, I did not detect one in 1776, or after we bailed them out twice in the 20th century. Could it be a recent phenomenom?  As in Oil for Food Scandal?  As in palsy walsy Hussein?

Nah that is too simple! Les Americans are just Boorish snobs that dont have culture!  And dont appreciate the finer points of surrender!

I haven't seen this, but if they are going to do it I hope they stick with it.

What people seem to forget is how Western culture is treated as a disease, by even the French in Canada. They pass LAWS preventing people from using the English language in certain places and circumstance. They can't bear the idea of seeing English prominently displayed on business signs. They hate our technological terminology and make rules for workers not to use them.

They are intolerant of other cultures and religions as well. They act like self-expression is some sort of attack. And this is a nation who supposedly appreciates art? *snort*

I realize not all French people feel this way, but given these are the actions of their businesses and elected officials I think the term "they" is fair. If they hold our culture in such disdain that they'd pass laws to keep from catching our cooties, I don't think a silly Subway ad is out of line.

The ones that dont, left that place (or their ancestors did) long ago.

And Subway caved! Too bad! I liked the commercial!

Doesn't make sense. You'd have to be a moron not to know that it would earn you flak. Did they think no one would notice? That kind of defeats the point of advertising, doesn't it? It seems like if you had the nerve to make the commercial, you'd have the nerve to stick with it.

That can be said for the way they think about us too!

Doesn't make sense.

Perhaps they did it just to get the press and then pulled it. I agree, there was very little subtle about it. But it was funny!

When I stop laughing at my heritage, just plant me and put fertilizer on it!  It might not smell well, but at least something will grow!

If we can't laugh at ourselves how can we poke fun at others?

How very French of Subway. I think the last straw was when a Frenchman beat up Jarod.

Here's a quote from Hannibal Lecter, "I just love the French, they taste just like chicken."

We can, but then we should not.
