Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.
Left vs. Right
Published on July 29, 2005 By Dr Guy In Politics

In the after math of 9-11, many statements were made by the fringes of the left and right.  Whacked out statements, and just sheer idiocy.  Here with a couple of them:

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way--all of them who have tried to secularize America--I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.' "  - Jerry Falwell

"Well, I totally concur, and the problem is we have adopted their agenda at the highest levels of our government." - Pat Robertson (in response to above)

"Many families have been devastated tonight. This just is not right. They did not deserve to die. If someone did this to get back at Bush, then they did so by killing thousands of people who DID NOT VOTE for him! Boston, New York, DC, and the planes' destination of California--these were places that voted AGAINST Bush! " - Michael Moore, September 12, 2001

So what happened after these 3 statements were made?  After a lot of flack, Falwell and Robertson apologized for their comments.  And neither was made a guest at the RNC convention in 2004

Michael Moore has not apologized to this day.  Indeed he has just gone farther off the reservation.  But instead of marginalizing like the right did to Falwell and Robertson, the left honored him with not only a guest spot at the DNC convention in 2004, but a seat next to an ex president!  A truly honored spot!

So in the final analysis of actions speak louder than words, the right chastised and ostracized their kooks.  The left praised and promoted theirs.

Case closed.  Kooks on the left, rational people on the right.

You cant be mainstream if you shun those who are.

there are SO MANY left leaning publications and news stations it's hard to remember what did what to who.

Now explain why you think any of them are kooks.

Although I think all three need to improve the way they make their points, is there not some validity in their comments?

Secularism is definitely something that the fundamentalists rally against. The acceptance of hedonism in Western society is something that infuriates them. That doesn't mean you give in to them and become an Islamic state, but secularism is part of what the fundamentalists dislike.

And it does seem silly that you would protest against Bush by killing someone other than Bush. You might argue that killing those who voted him in is killing people who were responsible for Bush's policies. The silly part of Moore's statement is about NY having voted against Bush (oh and of course his listing of places that weren't attacked...but a factual slip does not a kook make). No matter where they targetted, they were going to kill a mixture of Republicans, Greens, Libertarians and Democrats. I don't think the attackers have any other option if they want to carry out their protest in violent ways (after all, you don't have wars where you ask each individual soldier who they voted for), but that doesn't make it any more right or fair.

None of these three may be very impressive orators, in that they do not show themselves to have exercised reason very well, but there is underlying reason in their comments. These are not kooks, just angry people.

True.  Any wonder I just read news on line?

Pat Robertson took credit for praying a Hurricane away (Gloria, 93).  Falwell says Catholics are the Anti-Christs.  Mickey Moore?  Where would you like me to start?

As for a kernel of truth, that is just PR on their part.  For the US is not nearly as hedonistic in many respects as western Europe (The Europeans would claim more enlightened in regards to human sexuality), and yet they hate America.  Why?  Because we are the alpha male.  So all of the kooks above are just re-arranging deck chairs on the titanic.  At least Robertson and Falwell had the decency to appologize after their idiotic remarks.

Ok, so they may have said kooky things in the past, but explain why these comments are kooky. My previous arguments still stand.

Didn't you think that was amusing? It's like getting a self-avowed Neonazi to comment on a Communist party get-together. I wish they did that kind of thing more often. At least the reporter's biases would be more obvious if that was the case.
