Not for perhaps 40+ Japanese
Published on May 27, 2005 By Dr Guy In Current Events

I remember when I was still a teen reading about Lt Hiroo Onada and how he had hid out for almost 30 years in the jungles of the Phillipines waiting to be rescued by his comrades.  For a child of 17, that was an almost unbelievable tale, and yet (as long as you dont think the moon landings were a hoax), it was true.

Now comes a story that 2 more have been found, and possibly another 40 still hiding!  That is over 60 years since the war ended.  Both are reported to be in their 80s (duh!), and are afraid to go home for fear of a courtmarshall.  Both have stated they want to go home.

Think about these people.  They left japan when it was being wracked by war, a war their country was doomed to lose.  And yet today?  Japan is one of the strongest economies in the world, and indeed the stongest in Asia.  Japanese products are the envy of Europe and the USA.

I hope they get to spend their last days in their homeland.  It is kind of ironic that while Japan lost the war, during these gentlemen's exile they won the peace!
