Got a Question
Published on May 20, 2005 By Dr Guy In Blogging

When in the Forums, how can you flag a thread to be watched so you get notification when some one responds?

Thanks for the answer! (premature, but not unwarranted).

I can help...

Go to 'my account'.  Select manage site titles and themes, and click on it.  Then, you can enable auto-watch so that when an article is updated you get notified.

Dr. Guy, I am not aware of a simple way to watchlist forum threads. If it is also a blog article you can go to the persons blog and watchlist it there. There is the 'Join mailing list!' option at the bottom of the forum, it might be a watchlist type effect, but since that option is also on blog articles I doubt it would watchlist things. Looking at the watchlist icon on the blogs, in theory you could manually enter the article id for the forum thread and watchlist it that way. In other words: https://www.joeuser.com/action.asp?cmd=ADDWATCHLISTITEM&ACID=(insert your stardock id number here)&AID=(insert article number here)
Put in the numbers and that might work. Next question would likely be 'how do I find my stardock id number and an articles number?' Click on your name in a comment and that will take you to the JoeUser Profile, Stardock.net ID is the first thing listed. Article number is listed in the url (starts with http and usually displayed at the top of the screen) of the article/forum thread. It's the number after AID= and will be at the end of the url. If your on the forum there might also be a # with more numbers, ignore that part. I can't confirm this would work for forum threads, but I would expect it to.
Dharmagrl, it sounds like what you said would cause all of your articles to be watchlisted. From the way that option is worded it doesn't sound like it will watchlist other peoples forum threads. But I could be wrong...

Dude, there's an easy way to watch someone else's article...there's a little magnifying glass icon at the top of the article....you click on that and you're notified whenever a new post is made to the thread.

It's that easy.

Danny, Thanks.  I will play around with that and see what occurs.  I dont mind typing (since I cut my teeth in MS DOS), so if it works, I will let you know.

I decided to go to the answer man this time instead of asking the Admins.  They may know too, but you are right almost all the time!

Thanks again.

Dharma, I do watchlist mine (for about a week), but the magnifying glass is not an option in the forums, so that is why I asked.  It is not a problem on the regular JU site, but I have noticed that some articles dont appear on the site, but do in the forums.  Not sure why, but I would like an easy way to watch list them if I find one in the forums.

Thanks anyway!

Your question did get me thinking. Since all articles have unique id's, you can read them from anywhere in JoeUser (and probably wincustomize too). If you read it and it's not on the forum then it will have the watchlist icon. So (any valid name).joeuser.com/index.asp?(article number) will show you that article. I'm not aware of any articles that arn't in blogs and are forum only, but if you have the id number you can make them look like blogs. So for example http://drguy.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=80 will show an old article by Brad Wardell, complete with watchlist icon. Just change the AID number for whatever article your looking for and poof, watchlist icons are everywhere.

That is brilliant!  WHile not exactly the answer to my question, it helps me in other ways!  I will try that out tomorrow!  Just burning some CDs for my son today and checking my mail during the slow burn!

p.p.s.  It works like a charm!  There is a problem with the forum links right now, and so I decided to try your idea!  Yepper!  Thanks a million again!
