By a 5-4 vote the Supreme Court ruled the execution of people who commit capital crimes before the age of 18, cannot be put to death. While some may decry this as giving a free license to the perps, it still does not allow them to walk free after age 18 (Lee Malvo will spend his entire adult life in jail). So while it is a good and needed step, it is just a small one.
But the irony of the ruling is in how the court split. Swing voter O'Connor voted with the Conservatives, and Conservative Kennedy (I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but this is Anthony, not Teddy) voted with the Liberals on the court.
That is why I found the whole issue and shocking controversy amusing. Sometimes, issues such as the death penalty are not left right issues. Sometimes, they transcend politics and bring into question more important issues like a persons own set of morals and concepts of right and wrong.
Both sides have them, but all too often they just toe the liberal or conservative line to remain with their faithful brethren. Never questioning why they beleive as they do, just doing it because that is what they are 'supposed' to do.
Kennedy just did something so few people these days of polarizing politics do. The right thing, even tho everyone assumed as a conservative, he would vote against it. Sorry political bigots, you were wrong this time!
