First a little History.  capital one, the Big cheese in these parts, use to be the Credit card arm of a bank Called Signet.  I once had a card with them. 15 years ago (this January 8), I lost my job and became unemployed.  As my previous employer gave me 5 weeks severance for 12 years of service, I was in financial hardship.

So I started a new full time job, looking for work.  In the interim, I talked to all my creditors and explained the situation.  The Mortgage compnay was fantastic!  as were most of the rest.  Except Signet! (Capital one!).  Thye wanted their wants when they wanted them!

In Time I got a new job, and my first act, with every last penny I could scrape together, was to pay them off and cut up their effing card!  And I spit on their mailings to this day!  And I hate their stupid commercials!

Well, I have a valid reason to hate their commercials!  And so do you!  I knew they were a bait and snatch company!  And it will soon be a fait accompli' in Minnesotta!

Read the article.  I wonder if I can be a character witness for the prosecution?????

The start of the linked article reads:

ST. PAUL - Attorney General Mike Hatch sued Virginia-based Capital One on Thursday over ads that promote a fixed interest rate of 4.99 percent for the company's "No Hassle" credit card.

Customers who miss a payment deadline or exceed their credit limit can end up with interest rates of as much as 27 percent, Hatch said at a press conference. About 40 percent of the credit card's users will be paying higher interest rates within two years, he said.

"It's very clear that these ads are designed for the sole purpose of getting people to believe that the rate is fixed and it can't change," Hatch said at a press conference. "It's consumer fraud."

Very few credit card companies have anything but raping you in mind. The only really fair, reasonable-rate cards I've ever come across, without the usurious late/overlimit rate kickers, were from Navy Federal Credit Union and USAA Federal Savings Bank, both catering to current & former military. Discover Card also seems to be fairly reasonable.

And even when the Fed funds rate and all other consumer debt rates have been hovering at historic lows for years now, most of the credit card companies have maintained rates which were at one time considered usury, added late payment fees and shortened the payment cycle from 30 days or a month to as little as 17 days (more like 10 by the time you actually get the bill in the mail), a move clearly intended to increase the likelihood of incurring late fees and rate hikes. There seems little difference between them and loan sharks anymore. And got forbid you ever need to take a cash advance - they've rigged the rules so that the only way to avoid the differential interest is to pay off the "entire" balance two months in a row. Any payments get applied to cash advance balances *last* so without paying off the whole damn thing you never cut into it.

About time some state AG said, "Enough!" Props to him.

Right!!!! Got one of those and they have already done the deed!

But you are right, no CC company likes you!  They all use you!  Well, I am using them!  I dont keep ANY balances!

But beyond that for the normal ones, Capital one is a shyster outfit!
