Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.
OR who really wants to?
Published on November 29, 2004 By Dr Guy In Current Events

There is starting to be rampant speculation on the non-story of who will replace Dan Rather after he retires. (Note: Non story as his March retirement was leaked back in September in the Blogosphere.)

Now there is talk about either Matt Lauer or Tim Russert.  While I dont hold Matt Lauer in high regard, I still think the is a credible if slanted video journalist.  Tim Russert comes closest to be unbiased in his video Journalism of any ones I have listed to, but again, why would he trade his reputation for a third rate network?

The truth is the postition is one of prestige, for now.  It is obvious to most people that the main line media is dying, but until the death knell is sounded, Jennings, Brokaw and Blather hold a unique and powerful position in America.  Rather's replacement will join the other 2 as the mouth pieces of news for many Americans, regardless of their political leanings.

But how long will these positions remain so powerful?  That is the $64 question, and one that both Lauer and Russert, if asked, should look at before accepting the position.

My personal opinion is that it will not be long enough for anyone young to want to risk their career on.  For once you have gone to the top, it is hard to accept second fiddle again.  And even if they would agree to it, often employers would not, for there would always be that nagging thought, that the person would not be a team player.

hi the drguy. at this point i am not sure it matters who replaces dan blather, one thing for sure it will be another liberal nut job. I personally would like to see shepard smith....

Shep Smith Of Fox? Heading over to CBS? Pure lunacy, I say.

I think Tim Russert is too smart to take the job. I agree with Dr. Guy that taking Blather's position would be career suicide.

Tonight, I saw an interview on O'Reilly that brought up a different perspective. The guest was alleging that the nightly news on the three major broadcast stations will remain a fixture for years to come. His reasoning stemmed from the inability of the general public to give news anything more than those 21 minutes. He said the average American wants a "Reader's Digest or Cliff Notes" version of the news. Interesting and sad analysis.

Shep Smith Of Fox?

No, I don't want it to be him. I enjoy him right where he is. No need to move him over to a dying broadcast. I wouldn't get to see nearly enough of him there....

I tend to agree with you, and that would rule out Russert.  He is left of center, but he does appear to be fair and balanced in his questioning of guests.

I agree with your assessment of Tim Russert.

And unfortunately, I may have to agree with Bill O'reilly's Guest.  After all, even tho almost 120m americans voted this past month, that still left about 80+m who did not.  And 80+m is pretty good market share.

I heard that they're giving serious consideration to replacing Rather with Gilbert Gottfried.

Slightly OT, but funny:

Joe Scarborough in an article on MSN today has coined a new epithet for us. Discussing Brian Williams taking over for Tom Brokaw, he referred to the "pajamahadeen bloggers who took Dan Rather down." Never mind that Rather did himself in, but that's another story.

Pajamahadeen. I kinda like that. Maybe it will stick.

Cheers,

After reading Margaret Carlson's Opinion piece in LA Times titled:
When the Job Stinks, a Woman Gets It
I wondered if Les Moonves would consider Rudi Bakhtiar for first chair -I'm sure his pal David Letterman would approve.
