There is starting to be rampant speculation on the non-story of who will replace Dan Rather after he retires. (Note: Non story as his March retirement was leaked back in September in the Blogosphere.)
Now there is talk about either Matt Lauer or Tim Russert. While I dont hold Matt Lauer in high regard, I still think the is a credible if slanted video journalist. Tim Russert comes closest to be unbiased in his video Journalism of any ones I have listed to, but again, why would he trade his reputation for a third rate network?
The truth is the postition is one of prestige, for now. It is obvious to most people that the main line media is dying, but until the death knell is sounded, Jennings, Brokaw and Blather hold a unique and powerful position in America. Rather's replacement will join the other 2 as the mouth pieces of news for many Americans, regardless of their political leanings.
But how long will these positions remain so powerful? That is the $64 question, and one that both Lauer and Russert, if asked, should look at before accepting the position.
My personal opinion is that it will not be long enough for anyone young to want to risk their career on. For once you have gone to the top, it is hard to accept second fiddle again. And even if they would agree to it, often employers would not, for there would always be that nagging thought, that the person would not be a team player.
