100 Bags of blood........
Published on January 31, 2008 By Dr Guy In Blogging

Nope not what you think!  But I am now official!  Although I long ago passed the century mark, it is now official with the VBS that I have donated that many pints! (They have changed systems 3 times since I started giving and "lost" about 30 donations - plus another 20 or so made before I moved to the area).

I am now a centenarian!  Lot of blood poured through these veins in the last 30 years (I donated my fist pint to VBS - which was RMBS back then - in September 1978), and not all wasted.  It does feel good to know that some where, there are people who are kissing loved ones because I could donate and did.

The first 100 down, now on to the next 100!  Should be done by the time I am around 70.

I'll never know. They have a program now where you can do a double donation (they take out 2 pints and put back in the plasma) that would allow the donor to donate only every 16 weeks.  Well, since I hate the donation process, that sounded good for me!

BUT (always one, eh?), since I am a universal donor, they want ALL my components, so they will only take a pint at a time.  It was a bit humerous back in the spring.  They had 2 of us in the chairs and were asking us if we would want to do the 2fer.  Both of us said "hell yea", but then the lady looked at our charts and said "oh, sorry, you have to give all of your blood, so we can only take 1".  I dont know how many 2fers they got that day, but there were 2 of us that were disappointed.

Wow! I've not done any donation lately because of my anemic situation. I think it's great that you do though!

Wow! I've not done any donation lately because of my anemic situation.

Women are especially susceptible to that.  I hope you get it strengthened soon.  I once turned up anemic.  It turned out to be a polyp on my colon.  Giving blood identified it long before my doctor would have (it was benign).  So I guess I am going to live a long time.
