Maybe 4!
Published on March 6, 2007 By Dr Guy In Basketball

Yep!  Not since the early 80s has the Commonwealth of Virginia been so endowed in the sport of hoops!  This year, barring an injustice on the order of the Immaculate reception, Virginia should have 3, maybe 4, teams in the big dance!

Virginia Commonwealth University (the only school that gets the name right) qualified last night.  UVA and Va. Tech should be in by virtue of beating every top tier team in the ACC (they just could not figure out how to beat the also rans).  Old Dominion may join them in an at Large bid, but their conference is not considered top tier, so multiple bids are not always given.

But Virginia is not a stranger to the big dance.  After all, last year's Cinderella was none other than George Mason - A Virginia team!  And UVA managed to get into the final 4 once when they had one of the greatest basketball players of all time (and then did it without him).

I know that our fair neighbors to the north will be represented as they are having a good season as well (beating the hated Duke - outside of Durham, who does not?).  But I wonder how many other states can claim 3-4 members of the final 64?  I think that list is going to be very short!

Terp, the Season is over.  Time to quit hating Duke (well we can never really do that), and start worrying about Virginia!  All of us against just you!

By the time all of the teams are in the tournament there will be a few states with at least 3 teams. I knew Texas will be one, and maybe California. North Carolina will have 3. Indiana probably will. I say Ohio will have at least 3. Oh and don't forget Tennessee and Pennsylvania they may have 3 apiece. Who knows I bet 1 or 2 other states may squeeze 3 in, too.

I can see NC, but Ohio? I dont see that one. California is so big, probably. Penn? Cant think of 3 from there, but you may be right. But if ODU gets an at large bid, that will be 4 from Virginia. I guess we will know by MOnday.

Ohio will have Ohio State, Wright State and Xavier. Maybe Akron, too. Pennsylvania will have Penn, Pittsburgh and Villanova. The only reason I said California is because it's so big but I think the other states I mentioned have a better chance than them to have 3 teams.

Wright State? That's a Jr. College! I went to UD, and no one took Wright state seriously!

(I missed their upset win.)

Didn't they used to say the same thing about Va. Tech?
