Shades of DynaMaso!  Yes, today was spent trying to piece together a broken story of a dead hard drive at work!  No warning, just bleeh!  And all my settings went to the dogs!  Fortunately not a lot of data was lost.  Just some archived email messages (with "The Captain" gone, I will probably not need them), my favorites (now that really hurt!) cookies, and Arrrgggggg!!!!!!

The damn time sheets and evaluations of my direct reports! (Fortunately, the HR have them, but then I would like a copy - yea right from the HR Nazis?)

All in all a waste of a day, duplicate emails (and some not duplicated - so back to SQ1).  And a lot of stress as I was out of touch (not totally) with the heart beat of my peeps!

And that was just a smidgen of what Dynamaso had to go through!  As I am much older, I thank God!  That I did not have to endure his problems (actually, I did - about 18 years ago.).

Need any help there Dyna?  A warm cup of coffee, an atta boy, a shoulder to cry on?  I REALLY understand!

Thanks for the offer, mate, but I'm doing fine. Well, actually, I could do with a couple of vodkas, but that aint nothing unusual

Just randomness.  A hard drive today is rated for a MTBF for 250k hours.  But that is a mean, which means some will last for 50 years!  Some not a one.  I was lucky at home.  My old one gave me warning.  Work?  Not a thing.  Hard drives are the most prone to failure (and the most fatal) as they really are the only moving parts in a computer these days.  And moving means wearing and wearing means failure.

On your computer, get a second drive.  And save all important stuff to a CD or CDRW (DVD can supplement CD).   never trust a drive to live past your next boot or day!  They are better than floppies, but not by much!

Name the brand, and it is in the post!

Sorry old bean.  But between you and me, when it happened, all I could think of was "I am glad for networks".  Take care of Toni!  You guys are the Oscar winners of love in my book!

Ah Doc - you poor thing.

But thank your luckies you're able to have favourites etc at work - up until about 6 months ago our network settings were such that we could have NO personal email contacts - all had to be approved through IT. And to date, every time I start up Internet Explorer, it's like the very first time you use it, with all those annoying little warning pop-ups. I can add favourites, but EVERYONE on my network will see them. So I don't. But I'm getting really good at remembering favourite site names!

Technology is great...when it works.

To err is human, but to really screw things up requires a computer!

I know what you mean Doc. Last summer we lent our school out for summer school. After that our computers were so messed up by bugs we had to get the techs in to clean up the whole system. I have vowed that no summer school will come near my lab in future!

When I worked in the schools, we allowed summer schools and other classes to use the computers.  But we had them locked down tight. And an image ready to be reloaded should any show any signs of tampering.  I like the idea of keeping a boot disk at the ready that will log into the network and reload an image in minutes!  Ghost was a godsend when they created it!
