Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

Seriously.  They cost what, a few bucks?  And they fail almost without fail!  So what are they good for?  Take them down and they die!

I was listening to one of the fill ins on a talk show and he was ranting about them.  A caller said the reason is that the leads are cheap (ok, so are the lights) and that the reason they fail is they corrode so fast.  Given how many we replaced this year, and how many failed, I think he is right.  These Christmas lights are made to be disposable!  Guck!  Such a waste.  But that is what we demand.  We want cheap.  Good leads? (for any lectrician, they know this).  You want gold!  Does not corrode.  But then my wife really does not want me to melt her jewelry, so we get cheap.

I read Karmagirl's blog about LEDs (I cannot find it, sorry Karma!  Please send me a link).  I would be very interested to see if they do actually do better.  I am not questioning the lights.  But I am wondering about the leads.

And wondering why I am not just chucking all these lights in the garbage and going for more!  I guess because we get about a 50% retention rate.  But 50% of 20k is not good!  Ah the price of love!

My MO is to buy my lights on clearance the week after Christmas. That way we can dispose the bad strings and replace them with new ones. Usually, we end up carrying over a couple of old strings, meaning our light collection grows slightly every year.

But as little as I pay for them (surprise, surprise, right?) I don't usually mind chucking the discount priced strings the next year.

Exactly! About a 25% retention rate I would estimate.

That is the problem - so many things are so cheap to replace, it is just not worth fixing them, what you say about throwing the lights also applies on microwaves, toasters, kettles, tumble dryers and a host of other electrical goods- we are one very big throw away society.

I agree with Shovel don't put them up. I also think they are a fire hazard.

I have stopped sending Christmas and birthday cards now due to the waste generated and only send e cards.

I wonder how many real Christmas trees are used world wide and out of those how many get thrown away and how many are "replant-able" ones.

How many meters of christmas lights are used each year world wide and how many meters get chucked out each year?

Well, the 2 are not really related (Christmas trees and lights). Why? Because of the way the lights are made. Back in the 60s, you wanted cheap? You bought Japanese. You knew it was going to be thrown away soon, but you needed something cheap for the job.

I hope that is where Christmas lights are now. And as we know today, Japanese means quality and it will last. Right now, I am willing to pay extra for quality. In time there may be enough of me so that is what is available.

And as I told Shovel - not doing it is not an option. Besides, it does bring joy to many in the neighborhood - including me. As much as I hate putting them up and even more taking them down, I do love looking at them when they are up. As do many neighbors that comment on them (and based upon our neighborhood - they feel the way I do).

Oh no, I ain't about to be a doin' that!

But yeah, I've done the Chriistmas light thing and the part I hate most is finding a good out of the way place to keep 'em the rest of the year
