Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

For you working stiffs (Mason excepted), you may not know it but in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue and discovered America on October 9th.  Why?  cause it is a Monday! As they say, leave it to a man to sail in the wrong direction, get where he was not going, and not realize he was lost!

Thus was born Columbus day (even though we are named for Amerigo Vespucci - at least he knew where he was not).  And a Holiday for Banks, the Feds, and States (and some students).

The problem with these phony holidays is you never know if the Trash man is coming (he did, but I was not sure), if the Liquor store is open (the state has a monopoly here) or if the Mailman is coming (he is not).  And of course since Columbus was Christian, he could not coordinate his non-discovery with Rosh Hashannah (sp) as my Wife works for a Jewish Law firm and they get that holiday off (that was LAST monday).

Working for the state has its advantages - as in we get about 14-15 days of holidays a year, this being one of them.  But, other than trying to get my clients to schedule my visits on them, they can be quite boring.  I really dont want to do anything without my wife, so I play on the computer, pick up limbs in the yard (we just had a monsoon this past weekend) and fight with the cat about jumping on the computer.

At least now, I can do SOME work now that the captain is gone.  But being a "professional", it is non-paid.  And of course all our fellow chaps and Lassies in other countries are probably working and wondering what the hell we are doing with a day off (as am I and thus the "phony" part of the holiday).

I guess I should not complain, but I sure loved the work when I was a consultant!  Then I could work and get paid!  And they did not bat an eyelash, as the rest of the "COV" people were alergic to the office on these days.

I guess I may get use to it some day.  But I am stir crazy today, and just waiting for Lunch time so I can spend it with my love.  We eat lunch together so seldom as we work so far apart.  So at least that is one good thing!  Well, I guess sleeping to 7am is another!

So for all you that forgot what today is, it is MALE day!  Where not asking for directions pays off with a holiday!  And getting lost is forever made a trait of being a guy!

Have a great "no direction, lost" day!  Work resumes tomorrow.

p.s.  Mason excepted because his Job has no holidays, but he managed to get this one timed with his time off.  NOT that he is not a working stiff!  Far from it!

I don't think we ever got Columbus day off...it's fair week back at my high school...so they have all week off. As for me, well...I'm still hitting the books today...but I'm done with classes already.

Columbus day is just silly. Lot of people "discovered" North America before he stumbled on to it. If I recall correctly, he never made it past the Bahamas anyway.

We should have Asians day as they are the ones who actualy discovered this continent and became the Native Americans.

Or how about Vikings day? They're really the first Europeans to come here.

I got the day off -- by taking a vacation day!

Seriously, I wish the government would get smart and just strategically place one recognized holiday per month in every month throughout the year.  Move some around if necessary to accomplish the task, but give us all at least one long weekend per month in each month in the year.

Yeah, I know I can make my own by using vacation days, and I just might take after a co-worker that continually takes Fridays off throughout the bulk of the year.

Actually, all of this talk just makes me miss the time when I was working as a contractor at one government site where I was able to take advantage of the government's "alternate work schedule" or "regular day off" schedule.  I had to work an extra hour for 8 work days over 2 weeks, but got the 10th day off "for free."  (Of course it wasn't free, I had already put in the hours on the other days, but you get the idea).  It was so cool getting all those days off, especially when they'd back up with the Monday holidays.  During one stretch I think I had about 6 straight weeks of 4 day work weeks.  Very nice.

Anyway, I'm glad for the day off today, even if I had to use some vacation time to get it.  It's always nice to have a little break in the work schedule.

We use to have that at DOE (Education).  We could work 4 10s, or 4 9s and a 4.  Same thing. WHen I went to work at a local School division, the summer was a mandatory 4x10, with a 3 day weekend.  Unfortunately (actually not) since we were in the middle of networking the entire county, I got very few Friday's off.  But it was fun!

Haha, funny Doc! I'm here 'slaving' away, no holiday off for me! My kids are in school today. My son was trying to work his way out of going to school. I told him to stop complaining because at least he gets two days off at the end of the week!

Enjoy lunch, or rather, considering the time, I hope you had a good lunch with your wife! Don't work too hard now ya hear!!
