180 Viruses!

That is no typo! 180 viruses! I am working on my cousin's daughter's computer and that is how many she had! It is by far and away the record for me. I have never had anyone even begin to approach that number of viruses on a single computer! And it is still not right!

In addition, it had over 1200 items of spy/ad Ware on it (I have heard worst stories on that as I am on a Resnet list). And why am I working on it? She complained she was getting "out of memory errors". No duh! I am surprised it even booted (barely. It took about 45 minutes to see the desktop, and longer to get into any application).

I am in the process of finishing the installation, but I am going to call my cousin and ask for the restore CD. I will recover files they have, but I would not feel right giving this back to him as Windows is severly cripled.

180 viruses! Amazing!

Any suggestions on the best way for me to connect to her PC from mine, anything free is prefered?

If they have XP, you can use Remote Desktop. If they have another version, get VNC (free). They will have to open up their router to allow you access, but with the GUIs these things have, it is not a big deal.

I am going to as soon as I recover anything they have on it. It is too crippled to leave as is.

so the official policy was that all their documents had to be saved to floppies instead of the hard drive.

Save to the HD, and copy to floppy! That is what I told people in the old days. I dont trust floppies!

Or as our Aussie mates say "flamin Nora". I guess thats a Nora on fire.

The sad part is that most times you do a clean up like this for someone, it's back in the same shape in a few months.

Always a good idea to ghost a fresh install then you can roll it back in under an hour.

Actually, Dr Guy was detained and has been posting to this thread from the quarantine area of the CDC (Center for Disease Control). Apparently Homeland Security and the FBI heard about it and weren't risking him being released into the wild.

Hope they get you deloused real soon, matey....we be needin' ya back on deck ASAP.

Fortunately it was the daughter's computer, so hopefully they got none of that. I think I saw a couple of keyloggers (I did not read all 180). I know there was at least one.

P.S. 180? *scoff* Beat 562.

*scoff* to all. Beat 2148. It was on my Uncle's PC, they had it for about 3 years with no virus prtection.

It did take about 2 days to clear everything off. And it took about 30 minutes to boot, but its running now.

If you have a Windows CD and don't want to deal with the hassle of moving her to Linux or another OS, as with a new OS some problems are fixed but new problems do arise.

Use nLite Link in combination with MicroWinX Link and turn her computer into an Internet/Gaming Kiosk that is immune to Viruses, Spyware, uses little resources and is still Windows. Not only will she be protected from the nasty stuff out there on the internet but her computer will probably be more responsive.

Personally, why more people just give up in favor of more hardships is beyond me when with a little know-how you can deal with the problem.

Still its funny to have people think Linux and Mac OSX are virus-free. People like that make me happy and joyful to the point I am almost in tears.

Though, if you must continue with the changing the OS route ensure you teach what a good AV client is and why she shouldn't let the definitions go out of date.

well one of my friends computer crashed a few months ago & when we installed pc cilin on his computer it founded 10000 viruses(no typo error!!! & it was still scanning when we decided to format his hard disk) & my friend told us he was running his computer for almost 3 yrs. with no anti virus.
