That is no typo!  180 viruses! I am working on my cousin's daughter's computer and that is how many she had!  It is by far and away the record for me.  I have never had anyone even begin to approach that number of viruses on a single computer!  And it is still not right!

In addition, it had over 1200 items of spy/ad Ware on it (I have heard worst stories on that as I am on a Resnet list).  And why am I working on it?  She complained she was getting "out of memory errors".  No duh!  I am surprised it even booted (barely. It took about 45 minutes to see the desktop, and longer to get into any application).

I am in the process of finishing the installation, but I am going to call my cousin and ask for the restore CD.  I will recover files they have, but I would not feel right giving this back to him as Windows is severly cripled.

180 viruses!  Amazing!

Set her up with a Linux install running a Virtual install of XP that restores to a clean image everytime she reboots. Of course then she'll never learn "safe-surfing" but maybe you won't be doing this again in 8 months.

With 180 viruses and all that spyware/malware, it's a wonder there was room left inside the box for anything else....

I've heard of some really eccentric collections, but this one tops 'em all....she'd be well advised to swap hobbies and try stamp or coin collections instead.

Oh, and 'bloody nora' is an English colloquialism which is representative of one's shock/horror/surprise to something.....and when it's "BLOODY NORA!!!!" you can surmise it was due to a personal experience.

wow that is insane ive seen some bad ones like i went to tech school for computers and this one kid brings in his dell or something and he tells us it can hardly boot or work and so me and this other kid start to work on it it took maybe a half hour to boot up and then it took another half hour to start up his antivirus he never ran it much but it still worked so we ran it there was about 100 viruses on it and i cant remember how much ad/spyware on it but it was a mess he told us he had no idea how it got on there and tells us he just plays games on it, we knew he was lying, so we start to work on it and idk if u knew this but deep in hidden folders u can find out almost everything he has seen on that computer so we look and theres so much porn and everything some nasty stuff too we wish we didnt see. But it took us a long time to fix it then we say to him when he leaves with it. We know what you do on that computer and be careful and run ur antivurs if ur going to go to websites like that. You should have seen his face it was priceless. But that was the worst one i ever had to do

Not by a long shot! Her virus defs were a day before the subscription expired! But the funny (?) thing about trojans and worms and viruses, they dont need no steekeen dates!

Im surprized she had any anti virus at all. But 2002 - eek.

I have had maybe 3 or 4 virus's in 5 years - im very careful. The funny part is the ones I did have were almost unavoidable. One came in the form of an attachment from my own Uncle........I thought it was odd he had sent me something pertaining to his " Lodge " I believe it was a fund raiser type thing - the moment I hit that attachment - boom , blackness......but the good part was AVG grabbed it and tossed it in the vault before I could even gasp. My uncle had a worm virus sending out email to his entire addy book...he didnt even know it. That virus was one that was held in the vault but I wasnt able to delete it - I reformatted because of that little sucker.

The most recent was about a year and a half ago - I clicked on a music lyric site and up popped avg warning that it grabbed a trojan. The funny part was I had been to this site a 100 times before with incident. So much for " safe " sites . Although that was one I could delete. I guess its best to be safe - im not that educated in removing virus's from the registry etc . So my only recourse is reformatting which is not a lot of fun.

Wow, kids these days. And they are suppose to be very computer savvy. I had a similar situation with my sisters PC. I had to do maintanance on it every weekend and no matter how many times I explained to them, I had better chances of getting a wall to listen. My sister did not want me to ristict the internet cause then she would have problems using it. I left Puerto Rico about 4 months ago, and now they have DSL. I don't even want to imagine what the conditions of the PC are today. I will get Cable internet tomorrow so I will see if I can connect to her PC from here and check it out from here. Any suggestions on the best way for me to connect to her PC from mine, anything free is prefered?

Can you say...."Format C:"?....

lol thats a day in my life...i have to fix people's computers VERY often (sometimes up to 3 a day) and remove spyware manually (which is a pain in the butt btw), then give em a free antivirus like AVG and a spyware scanner and tell them "MAKE SURE YOU SCAN YOUR COMPUTER REGULARLY"...only to hear from them that they forgot to scan a file and now they got a virus...that is pretty much why i hate the paranoia associated with viruses in spyware

i guess there is no security in the world that can block stupid surfing habits...

P.S. 180? *scoff* Beat 562.

Can I respectfully decline the challenge?

My wife used to work in an office where the policy was that nobody was allowed to put any software on the computers. The staff was supposed to handle all that, but they either didn't have any anti-virus protection at all or the signatures were ancient. As a result, their computers were always infected and my wife would bring home infected floppies to run on her computer, which caused problems here. Fortunately, she's now self-employed and working out of a home office where I've appointed myself the job of making sure things are protected. We use Avast and have never had a problem.
Off-topic, but one more horror story about her old job. I guess they had a hard drive failure on one of their machines once -- and of course they didn't back anything up -- so the official policy was that all their documents had to be saved to floppies instead of the hard drive. To this day, Brenda doesn't trust hard drives, but at least I've got her using a flash drive now...

Some of these hackers are known to hijack web sites to spread their mischief.
