Liberals, as a rule, with many exceptions, some of them even here at JU, hate capitalism. (how is that for disclaimers?). They vilify Wal-mart, Big oil, Big Car, Big Business, and try to tax Big Farm (through the death tax) into oblivion, while making sure that little business is taxed into extinction.
And now we know why. Simply put, they cannot compete in the open marketplace. Air America, according to a liberal site (Oh, excuse me, Progressive - it seems liberal is a pejorative on the left), Think Progressive.
When it debuted, there were charges of shy locking and fraud on the founders. They managed to pull themselves through that one, while losing a couple of flagship stations. Then there was the Boys Clubs scandal (legal, if highly unethical), that they had to take a bath in to make right what everyone who saw it, saw as sleaze. And they struggled. With quite frankly third rate hosts to cover their slots. Al Franken (he was a better comic, and he stunk at being a comic) and Randy Rhoads (at least she was eye candy, but Radio is voice only).
Some who conceived of the idea, had high ideals. And thought they were going to counter the wave of conservative talk show hosts, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Neil Bortz, and Glenn Beck among them. Yet there was no company that was putting on those talk show hosts and others. Quite simply, they got their slots due to their experience, and the ability to be entertaining (Glenn Beck is hysterical! You should listen to his More-on Trivia!). There was not and never was a conspiracy that Air America had to counter.
But the idealist thought they could counter that field with their ideals and talking heads to push them. Problem was, their hosts did not push ideals, they just tried to drag down the competition! And that was and is their undoing. People don't want to hear negative all day long! They want to hear positive. With the exception of a few way out lefties, most people want to hear how good they are, not how bad they are. And so Air America was destined to failure. Constantly down people do not listen to radio, they commit suicide. Hard to build an audience with those that are trying to kill themselves.
The lesson of the last 6 years still has not been learned by some on the left. being against everything is not the way to "win friends and attract audiences". One of the other bloggers here at JU pointed out not long ago that Charles Barkley Switched to the democrat party, and that he did. But what the other blogger failed to mention was that he slammed the party he joined for not having a positive message. And he was right. He still is.
Anti-everything will get you pity for awhile, but eventually people tire of the "pity party", and tune you out. That is what happened to Air America. Simple capitalistic concepts. They did not deliver a product that anyone wanted to buy.
You can hate Big everything, and Business anything. But if you want to get paid, you better start learning the rules of capitalism. Asia is filled with starving communist who would love the chance to embrace capitalism.
