The local talking head was on today about racism, and how he hates it and all. I dont like the clown, but I would not exactly call him a racist either.
But the reason he was going on and on and on about it today is that he is having some work done to his home. And the contractor he picked came in and started talking about how the "Mexicans" were stealing work from him, and how "them N------ are just so lazy". It was clear from the monologue, that the contractor was about one step to the left of the Aryan Nation.
But the talking head did nothing. Did not call him to task, and did not show him the door. And it got me to thinking.
If we are not going to confront racism, are we any better? Seriously, this contractor needs to be shown that his intollerance comes at a price. And that price is customers (I am sure he does not get many black customers, but that is beside the point).
One of the callers, a bigger contractor himself, called in, and said when he is hiring, if a guy goes off on one of those rants, it is "I'll call you, dont call me". Why? Because he said it would cost him business in the long run. He is a business owner, so I lend credance to his call.
But it does beg the question. We hate racism, but are we willing to put our money where our mouth is? So far, I have not had to worry about firing a contractor because he was a racist (the only one I have hired to date, was black, and the only color he wanted to see was green!).
So what would you do? Would you fire that contractor and get another? There is more than one good one in the book. (Or more acurately, by recommendation).
