How many like Sarcasm?
I revel in it! I love it! Yes, I am a sarcastic SOB! I am very sarcastic. Sarcasm is a way of making a point when you are dealing with a bunch of 'feeling' people instead of thinking ones. So I use it daily (I work for a 'Feeling' Agency anyway).
The latest example is a co-worker. One of those "feeling" people who said he was only working there because he thought he could do some good (yet he sweated when his contractor job went COV and he had to apply for it). So where is he today? Working for a frigging HMO! For more money!
But that does not sound like he was 'in it for the good'. No, he is one of the millions of people that have never been laid off, so poop bricks when the thought arises.
So I wished him well. very sarcastically!
But sarcasm in the written world is harder to accomplish. There is no body language to accompany the statements so you have to either know the person, or you miss it. It is easy enough to do.
Sometimes a wink (winks are really not good for sarcasm tho) or a smiley (ditto) can convey sarcasm. But more often than not, it is the context of the message in the total of a persons writing. So you have to read the person, to see the sarcasm.
If an avowed liberal makes a statement such as "Bush did great on the Iraq Question", you know they are being sarcastic. So we laugh. If a Conservative says "WOW! I should have Voted for Al Gore because of Inconvenient Truth", you know he is being sarcastic as well.
But how do you know they are liberal, conservative, meat eater or vegan? You do have to read them. And when they make a 180 degree comment, while others are going "huh?", you know you have just read a sarcastic comment.
For Sarcasm in the written word takes a lot more effort than just "Duh, that is 7 letters and a vowel". You have to know the person, from their writings, to understand and get the sarcasm.
many do see it and I love a good subtle sarcastic remark! But others, alas, never do. They cannot understand nuances and subtlety. They see the black and white and that is all they see.
And that is a shame. For when they fail to see the sarcasm, they usually make fools of themselves by railing against the writer. And the world goes "What the hell are they talking about?".
While the rest of the world gets the joke, in the end, the joke is really on them for their obtuseness. For the ones that cant fathom sarcasm, I am sorry. It is a great medium, and I do love it so. And for those that do, it is the last form of original jokes, n'est pas?
