How many like Sarcasm?

I revel in it!  I love it!  Yes, I am a sarcastic SOB!  I am very sarcastic.  Sarcasm is a way of making a point when you are dealing with a bunch of 'feeling' people instead of thinking ones.  So I use it daily (I work for a 'Feeling' Agency anyway).

The latest example is a co-worker.  One of those "feeling" people who said he was only working there because he thought he could do some good (yet he sweated when his contractor job went COV and he had to apply for it).  So where is he today?  Working for a frigging HMO!  For more money!

But that does not sound like he was 'in it for the good'.  No, he is one of the millions of people that have never been laid off, so poop bricks when the thought arises.

So I wished him well.  very sarcastically!

But sarcasm in the written world is harder to accomplish.  There is no body language to accompany the statements so you have to either know the person, or you miss it.  It is easy enough to do.

Sometimes a wink (winks are really not good for sarcasm tho) or a smiley (ditto) can convey sarcasm.  But more often than not, it is the context of the message in the total of a persons writing.  So you have to read the person, to see the sarcasm.

If an avowed liberal makes a statement such as "Bush did great on the Iraq Question", you know they are being sarcastic.  So we laugh.  If a Conservative says "WOW!  I should have Voted for Al Gore because of Inconvenient Truth", you know he is being sarcastic as well.

But how do you know they are liberal, conservative, meat eater or vegan?  You do have to read them.  And when they make a 180 degree comment, while others are going "huh?", you know you have just read a sarcastic comment.

For Sarcasm in the written word takes a lot more effort than just "Duh, that is 7 letters and a vowel".  You have to know the person, from their writings, to understand and get the sarcasm.

many do see it and I love a good subtle sarcastic remark!  But others, alas, never do.  They cannot understand nuances and subtlety.  They see the black and white and that is all they see.

And that is a shame.  For when they fail to see the sarcasm, they usually make fools of themselves by railing against the writer.  And the world goes "What the hell are they talking about?".

While the rest of the world gets the joke, in the end, the joke is really on them for their obtuseness.  For the ones that cant fathom sarcasm, I am sorry.  It is a great medium, and I do love it so.  And for those that do, it is the last form of original jokes, n'est pas?

LOL

Growing up,  my dad used sarcasm and I was too naive to catch it,  then my older sister used it on me an I only heard meaness, and that was what she wanted too,  she wanted to hurt me.

I am for sure obtuse.  I don't get sarcasm,  most of of the time.  Sometimes I do get it and "some" think that I missed it!

To me,  I learned that it was a mean thing to do so tried to not use it,  only to learn I WAS using it with my daughter!!

Now?.....well.....the more subtle it is,  I miss it.  However......usually am better at using it in person cause then it's with those I know....   using it in written words is harder for me,  when I've tried to be funny it came across as something else!

Actually Sarcasm is a nice way of saying "your poo is showing".  Instead of saying "you freaking idiot", it says "Are donkeys related to you".  One is definitely antogonistic.  The other is - Hmmmm...Let me check.

Yes.  If you want to learn.  If you know it all, nope.

It is fun!  But when it is with our mothers, it usually includes pain!

There is a quote, I don't know who said it, that goes "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but often the funniest". I don't dig sarcasm too much, although I think we're all guilty of the occasional sarcastic remark. I think if it comes down to it, I would rather shut my mush than say something likely to offend. But that is me...

If done correctly, the audience gets it and there is no insult.  But I understand some do not like it.  And if used too much, it loses its edge.

I am extremely sarcastic. That's just my sense of humour. Usually I see the sarcastic comment I've made flying over someones head, luckily I don't do it for them, just for my own amusement, hehe!

Sally, that's my older sister too. After not seeing her for many years, when she did say something sarcastic I'd call her on it and then she flat out denied she'd said that. She claimed she'd said something else entirely! LOL.... she forgot I grew up...

It is both a humor outlet, and a way to make a point.  But I try not to let it sail over their heads as that kind of defeats the purpose in it.

The point of sarcasm is to say something outrageous.  I dont understand your sister then denying it.  She should have been glad you got it.

Ah, sarcasm. It dances off the tounge. I use it mostly everday...either for comedy or with people that tend to irritate me. One of the greatest inventions of language, period. I'm a sarcasm junkie, and I love it!
