Even if for the wrong reason

Harry Reid is threatening to block the congressional raise that the fat cats have voted themselves unless congress passes a new Minimum Wage law.  GREAT.  The last people who deserve a raise is those tin plated buffoons!  And if it takes an impotent threat by Reid (he cannot block the house raise as each house does its own thing even if they usually do it together) to kill their pay raise, I am all for it.

But I am afraid the Caspare milquetoasts of republicans will cave.  And doom another generation of poor minority teenagers to a life of need because no one is going to hire a no experience person for the same price they can hire an experienced one.

Yes, raising the minimum wage hurts teenage hiring.  When those people are just starting out and need to learn a work ethic and responsiblity, the raised minimum wage works against them and makes sure they do not have a chance.  It is the worst possible legislation as it penalizes the least among us that are able to fight against it.  Yet it "feels good" so the democrats love it.  Ignoring the mountains of empircal data that shows it does more harm than good.

So hopefully, Reid will follow through on his promise (and the house will delay theirs out of sympathy for the Senate) and the Republicans will stick to their guns, and for once - in a long while - we will have a good congress.

One that does nothing.

Here's hoping that Reid and company get no raise.

None of them deserve one.

The minimum wage should be tiered for part-timers and full employment--about a buck and a half an hour should separate them.

Why do you think there should be a difference? I remember when I was first out of high school. I couldn't get on full time. I had to work several part time jobs. Three actually. Why should part-workers not get the minimum wage?

And yes they do need to raise minimum wage. I think it's been the same for seven years now. I remember holding a job that I didn't get a raise until they raised the minimum wage.

Minimum Wage Laws = Government, I'm not willing to fight or work for better pay, DO IT FOR ME!!!!

Actual Minimum Wage: What a worker gets when he or she is willing to accept anything they can get for the time and skills.

You're right, Harry Reid is doing the right thing... for the wrong reasons.

Arbitrary that does not address all the issues.  But a start.  6 months is not enough.  And the amount of separation should be determined by industry, not the government.

This has nothing to do with part time vs full time.  It has to do with EXPERIENCE.  Simply put, you had none.  Harsh?  Yes.  But then I doubt you have found real life any less amicable either.

You want experience?   In olden times they were called Apprentices and Journymen.  Today they are called teenagers.

I wanted to highlight each of your statements as they are great slogans!

And thank you for the last one as you are right!

raising the minimum wage will also hurt American businesses, create a larger trade imbalance, increase wage inflation, increase unemployment, and raise the price of about everything you buy.

We're competing with nations where the minimum wage is 40 cents an hour, and yet we expect out companies to sell for the same price and pay over ten times as much in wages. Worse, many/most manufacturing jobs get needled into by the unions, so instead of minimum wage, we pay $15 an hour to compete with people who pay less than a dollar.

These legislators have one track minds. Next week they'll be railing along with the Col about the trade imbalance and never remember their part in it. When first-time workers have a hard time finding jobs, then they'll gripe about unemployment. It's just politics, people. It isn't like they give a damn about us.

Actually, I don't get the premise here, Doc. WHat the Dems are basically saying is "I'll let you screw the taxpayers if you let me poke them in the eye while you do it." How is that doing the right thing?

Their intentions are wrong, but the effect will be right.  They are refusing to approve their own raise if congress does not increase the Minimum wage.  As there is almost no chance for a minimum wage increase, then the senate probably will not get a raise.  That is the right thing.  Even if they are doing it out of petulence.

I dunno, I think they are probably corrupt enough to buy themselves a raise...
