Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

In another example of Zero Tolerance being proved to be stupid, a young man in Indiana is in danger of getting expelled.  Why?  Because he was honest!

The facts are not in debate.  Elliot Voge discovered shortly before arriving at school that he had forgotten a swiss army knife in his jacket pocket.  He went directly to the office and turned it in.  The office is just inside the doors.  He told them of his error.  He did not try to hide it, or plant it on anyone else.  In effect, he was honest.

For his honesty, he has been suspended for 10 days and faces an expulsion hearing today (April 10).  All because he was honest!

The message we are sending this young man and others around him is that honest does not pay.  Instead you should lie cheat and steal, just dont get caught.

Why is it that educators seem to lack the common sense that god gave even dumb animals?  This 'supposed' educator, Jimmy Meadows, makes you wonder how he could have been given such an important role.  When the students are smarter and more honest than the educators and their administrators, it is no wonder that education is in such a sorry state.

The Boy should be commended, and Meadows fired.  For gross stupidity, and incompetance.

Hello Dr. Guy, Couldn't agree more. Zero Tolarence is a knee-jerk response on the part of business, police and school communities that propmotes deceit and complete lack of thought. In this case, the student really did not bring a knife "to school." He turned it in at the office on his way into school. I worked three years as a District School Psychologist in my community and dealt with many very similar caes. One very odd one involved a youngster suspended for pretending to shoot at another student with his finger! It seemed to me that a whole lot of my work was mediating between rigid, black & white thinkers. Meanwhile students suffered and were taught some very wrong lessons, IMHO. Be well!

next time this happens the student will just go home, skip school and be on drugs!

no honestly the student should be praised, not buried.

That is an excellent way of putting it.  Yes, we need rules, but we need intelligent people to differentiate between a finger and a gun, or bringing to school, and turning it in at school.

Exactly!  Or he will just hide it and walk out at the end of the day with it and demonstrate that bad people wont tell!

They're kids, for God's sake, they're supposed to make mistakes and learn from them. All this poor kid is going to learn is to never be honest about anything, particularly to the authorities. Yeah, great example the zero tolerance jerks are setting, just great.

Zero tolerance is your fiend.

That was what the kids lawyer was saying.  It is unfortunate that administrators have checked their brains at the door in these matters.  I can see having the rules, but when the kid is trying to comply, and they still nail him, that does send the message "Honesty does not pay".

Perfect title for it!
