Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.

Several NY funeral homes have been busted lately for allowing organ harvesting by less than scrupulous people. It seems that a "Dr. Mike" managed to convince 17 or more funeral homes to go and take organs, bones and tissues from dead bodies that were later sold to hospitals for patients needing them. None of the dead people had signed Organ Donor cards (altho some stories indicate the accomplices in the funeral home were duped into believing they had).

Ok, let us review the facts. Dead Bodies - They have no say, other than perhaps a living will. They don’t need the organs or bones or tissues. So what is the harm?

The vendors - Ok, very much less than ethical. And they were doing it for the almighty buck. But their actions (in most cases) were helping living victims of disease and organ failure.

The Bereaved - They were clueless as the perpertrators substituted other items so the body would look normal for viewing.

So the questions. Is it wrong? If so, on how many levels (of the ones given, or give your own).

And was it wrong for the receipients to be able to live again even tho the dead people, or their relatives, did not give permission?

Interesting Dilemna. But some will go to jail for it I am sure.

What is it about body parts and cadavers that has us all feeling "iggy"?

We aren't allowed to sell our body parts (either while living or dead), but money often changes hands between those who didn't originally grow them.

I can donate as many organs as I see fit. If I have more than one hanging around my innards, I can even donate 1 while I'm alive. After I'm gone, I can even donate my whole body. What I can't do is "sell" the parts.

But wait a minute. If I "donate" a kidney while I'm alive, the doctors who extract it will make money off of it, the donar registry will make money off of it, and the doctors who put it in the recipient will make money too.

In the case of me donating my body to sience when I'm gone. Do you realize how much money a cadaver is sold for? All sorts of folks will profit monetarily from my donation... but if my family benefits monetarily.... oops, we have laws agin that!

It seems when it comes to body parts, everyone can make a buck.... but if we dare "sell" our own parts... well, that's just sick and wrong. ;~D

The idea may be old, but this case is new.  That is why I am curious to see what others thinnk about this.  SHould these people get the book thrown at them?  or just a slap on the wrist.  IN the end, while they enriched themselves, no one was really hurt as they were already dead.

Or were people hurt?  That is the question I guess.

All very true.  But then I guess that is another whole issue onto itself (profiting from your body vs others profiting from it).  The Article said that some bodies can fetch upwards of $100k - for the parts.

So if it is legal for anyone but the owner or family to profit from the sale of body parts, is what these people did wrong, shady, or just entrepreneurship?

So many questions and dilemnas.
