And sometimes that is not bad.

China cannot be mistaken for an open society, or even a tolerant one when it comes to private ownership of guns.  So what's a killer to do?  Make do with a knife.  5 "oficials" were killed by one knife wielding (and that is just the party line) nut case.  One gun would have stopped him after 1, 2 at the most.

But Guns kill, so Guns are bad.  People dont kill, just Guns.  So take guns out of the equation, and no more killing!  Eden on earth!  The best of all worlds!  Paradise!

I guess in this case the nut job wanted to send a few to Shangra La sooner than god did.

But at least guns did not kill anybody.

we suspect that the local police were in on the whole thing.

Yea, they do that in New York City here too.

So the other side of the coin, is how many more people than five would he have killed if he had a semi-automatic. I think the body count would have went up considerably. And if criminals can get guns even if they're illegal, why wasn't he packing anyway?

Attacking a Police station? He would have been lucky to get 2. And as we have seen in other countries, getting guns that are illegal (and I am not talking America) is not a problem when you want to do it. This cretin was probably just an enraged psycho. And regardless of his mental stability, he had to be taken out. The lack of guns here resulted (probably) in additional deaths. And none were caused by a gun.

I've always found the idea that banning firearms somehow makes life safer from criminals and nut cases. It's laughable at best and moronically naive at worst.

The main reason the Chinese government doesn't allow gun ownership is that they know if the citizens were armed they wouldn't remain in power very long.

Actually, the spear is in the house I'm currently at where guns are prohibited, but in my other house located in Trawas (somewhere in the mountains), we have a stock of single shot rifles after being broken into and robbed 2 times. Mom also hired military personnel from Jakarta 'cos we suspect that the local police were in on the whole thing. NO MORE BREAK INS! So, yea guns are the best when it comes to protecting your house!

How did you hire military personnel? Wouldent that be very expensive?

Its not expensive really since we got some contacts in the military. They tell me they get only about ten thousand rupiahs as their military salary which is almost equal to US$ 1000 (rank is sergeant)along with rice and stuff which I forgot. Its worth it since theere were two robberies where they were armed with machetes and threatening to cut one of my maid's throat. Luckily my family and I was in Bali at that time. We used to have 4 military personnel at the house. One had to go back to Jakarta.

well whatever makes you safe. Wouldent the military care that some of there men are renting them selves out to people? I know you are just protecting your house, but what about other people how want some experince military people for more "shady" business?

lol, I really don't know where shady business is coming from. Everything from military has gone more secretive now since the president put some restrictions on military owned businesses. Indonesia's not all that bad. The people we hired were friends of ours and they got an ok from the higher ranking officers 'cos they told them that the family was in trouble (which we were). We were threatened by a phone company, extorted by police (keep asking for donations even though we already gave), and threatened by one of our relatives which is trying its best to break us and make us leave from the area. We've pretty much isolated ourselves from the villages. Not a good feeling there. I don't recall a conversation about Indonesia and shady businesses though? Thought we were talking about how guns can make us feel safer?

@Nequa: After getting some short nap I read your post again and I really gotta ask, why does it feel like your saying that only Indonesia holds shady businesses? Seriously man, that was not cool. My family and I did hire the local police at first to protect the house after the first break-in and thought that it would be a lot safer. We should have known not to trust the local police because when We (my family) took our little vacation and came back, we found that the crooks took everything and the cop couldn't answer to any of our questions. We fired him and my mom asked some of her friends to help her out. They agreed to it, and my mom said that she would pay them to compensate for the military salary lost. Nothing shady with this deal. Yea I'm done with explaining about that. Back to guns.

I did not say that only Indonesia has shady business, in America we have shady business going on. I was asking how you were able hire soliders to protect your house. You did not say untill now that they were friends of yours. Also I did not say you and your famly were involved in "shady" businees, I was asking if criminal organizations have ever hired soldiers for something illegal. You know that not every soldier bleeds his countrys colors. I am NOT saying that the hole Indonesin army is corrupt, but there are people how will be tempted to use their skills for cash. It happens in every countrys armys.

I just want to know what the hell is going to be done about mentally unstable and just plain ignorant people laying their hands on these weapons.

It has the reputation, but I think most of the cops are honest up there. The smiley face was a winky - as in not really.

I think that was demonstrated in Beijing not long ago. Does make the gun control advocates envious of the chinese though.

All that can be in a free society. Even in a not free one they get them. People with the intention to kill will find a way. The availability of guns is irrelevant as this article demonstrates.

What exactly do you think can be done? Mentally unstable people have been around as long as people have been around. Whether they use a gun, a knife, or a rock, if they are determined to harm someone they will. The problem is when the rights of the majority are restricted in an attempt to prevent that minority from causing harm. That just doesn't make sense.

It would be impossible to identify and lock up every single sociopath and other types of broken people out there. Broken people are a fact of life. That shouldn't mean we treat every single citizen like they are broken too.
