"Abortion Alternative" is Deceit?

It seems that while the House of Representatives may only be meeting for 97 (or 123) days, they still have way too much time on their hands. Rep. Carolyn Mulroney has introduced a bill to "Protect" women seeking family planning from seeking such advice at "Abortion Alternative" Family Planning Clinics.

Protection from alternatives? Let's get real for a second. Women seeking abortion are not seeking help in Family planning, they are seeking help in avoiding Family Planning. Because Abortion is the ultimate family stopper (given a family being defined as parents and children, not just parents).

So why do they have to pass a law against clinics that counsel alternatives? If a women goes to one, after reading they are promoting "Alternatives" to abortion, she is probably aware they are not going to push her into having an abortion. That is not deceit. That is just plain advertising!

Or is it the moniker of "Family Planning" that must now include the option of Abortion? I thought this was all about choice? If indeed it is about choice, then why are they trying to make abortion the only mandatory choice? That is not choice, that is Political Correctness gone amok!

None of these 'so called' deceitful clinics are preventing any single woman from getting an abortion. They are merely presenting alternatives for the woman willing to listen. Last I checked, they were not holding these women against their will, or slipping them a mickey until the baby is born to prevent an abortion. And that is deceitful?

Spitzer, the over eager AG of New York has already gone after these clinics 4 years ago, only to be severely embarrassed and then withdrew his suit with his tail tucked between his legs. Now, what the abortion activists cannot do legally, they are trying to make legal.

Which is a sham and sad. Sad that Choice does not stand for choice, unless the choice is abortion.

Of course NARAL would love it, Abortion is their only choice.

This is the third time I've written this, because I keep slamming profanity into it and I want to be respectful to your blog.

If you want to talk about 'truth in advertising', then these people also need to be forced to publish that their clinics perform abortions. "Planned Parenthood" should be called "Preventing Parenthood". Feel free to browse your local yellow pages and see how many 'reproductive health' centers openly say they provide abortion services.

This is a sick double standard. I'm sure no one ever went to a 'reproductive health' clinic to see to their 'reproduction' only to find themselves in a fetal slaughterhouse. This person should really sit her sorry ass back in her seat and thank whatever power she thanks for abortion being legal at all.

If she wants to create an environment for moral imposition, there are mobs of us ready, willing, and able to do a little imposition of our own. I'm more than willing to allow states that want abortion to have it. If we are going to start throwing our weight around, though, this person had better get a set of scales and make sure she's in the right weight class.

With palms together, Hello Dr. Guy, Your post is just a little deceptive. The goods Representative is only asking in legislation that truth oin adverstising be applied to these "alternative centers." From the website you provided:

Noting that Bush administration funding has provided a "windfall" for such pro-life centers, Maloney said that some of those facilities "have adopted the brazen tactic of advertising and presenting themselves as legitimate family planning centers in order to lure women seeking abortion information and talk them out of getting an abortion."

To prevent this, the new bill would direct the FTC to "create rules that prohibit any organization from advertising services with the intent to deceive the public into believing that the organization is a provider of abortion services if it does not, in fact, provide abortion services."

"When women are making a health decision, they should never be subject to deceit and trickery," said Maloney. "Some of these crisis pregnancy centers should be called 'counterfeit pregnancy centers.' They have the right to exist, but they shouldn't have the right to deceive in order to advance their particular beliefs."

Later in the article someone from 'the other side' sufggests that no one is counseling women as to the details of the procedure and its potential risks. Contrare. Abortion is a medical procedure and I cannot think that a clinic would not either apprise a woman of the risks in writing or obtain her written authorization for such a procedure.

Deceit is unbecoming. regardless of the motive.

Thank you for your response. Just reading what is written, one may be tempted to agree with you. However the article clearly states that they do advertise themselves as Abortion Alternatives, and Family Planning. The latter is what Mulroney is going after.

Having then researched the origins, I found that indeed, none of these "Abortion alternative" centers had every advertises themselves as providing Abortion, just "Family Planning" and "Abortion Alternatives". Hence the only possible reason for this bill is to paint a scarlet letter on them. Which in itself is deceit.

You see that is the deceit. Why does Mulroney and NARAL demand that a "family planning" facility advocate abortion? As I stated, that is an oxymoron, and indeed as bakerstreet pointed out as well.

There is nothing 'deceitful' about presenting yourself as a family planning center, and not pushing abortion as an option. Abortion is, unfortunately, an option, but that does not make it the only option or even the best option.

It isn't deceit. The fetal slaughterhouses in question use sanitized language to advertise their services, calling themselves everything but 'abortion clinics'. That is the main reason for the confusion. No one is calling themselves abortion clinics, EVEN THE ABORTION CLINICS.

So it is a tad facetious to say that 'truth in advertising' is the issue here. I will agree to laws that state those opposing abortions have to label themselves openly when abortion clinics have to label their services openly as well.

The person in question is mad because non-abortion clinics are calling themselves 'family planning centers'... well, abortion clinics have no reason to call themselves that, either. When the word abortion is plainly posted on the outside and advertising of every abortion clinic, then I'll accept regulation of the other side.

...and the palms thing is getting a little sad. Frankly I find it odd that someone as supposedly experienced in your religion as you claim to be would feel the need to announce it to everyone every time they post on a messageboard. Perhaps next time I'll begin mine with "With Finger up my nose" or "With Left Hand Scratching My Butt".

I don't have a problem with your religion, and you can type what you want, but I just thought I'd let you know after a while it starts looking cheap. It would be like any of our Christian friends opening every post with "I greet you in the name of Christ"... sure, nothing wrong with it, but after a while you'd wonder why they need to openly define themselves that way with every post.

I think these "family planning clinics" are deceitful. It amazes all these "Christian" organizations that have no problem deceiving people in order to get them to hear their message. If they are promoting adoption or keeping your baby, they should say so. Let them advertise as abortion alternatives or adoption information not as family planning clinics. These places exist to scare woman out of abortions. Of course, most don't offer any assistance other than showing these girls a brutal film and then they'll say a prayer for them. If that doesn't work, they'll be standing outside the clinic with signs and shouting at them.

I will also say that if they are offering abortions, they should also say so but then they have to worry about wackos coming to blow them up or shoot them.

Unfortunate or not it's still legal except in North Dakota. The thing is that legal or not it has been happening as long as their have been humans on this planet. The difference is whether it is done in a sanitary medical facility with trained personnel or some dirty, back alley.

I'm amazed that abortion clinics would be so ashamed of their service that they'd put everything except "abortion" on their door and advertising. Oh, unless there is something so sickening about what they do that they have to sanitize it.

Let abortion clinics advertise as abortion clinics, and not planned parenthood. These places exist to murder children, not plan for them.

Lol, maybe they should re-evaluate their service to a nation wherein they have to hide what they do for their own safety. Maybe infanticide isn't as much of a 'duh' as they make it out to be if just announcing their presence places them in danger.

It's South Dakota, and several other states now are rushing to do the same thing. Maybe you should pay a bit more attention so that you know which states you're talking about... maybe even yours is drafting such a law .

South Dakota. And you are wrong on so many levels. They advertise themselves as "Abortion Alternatives". How is that deceptive? Yes, they advertise as "Family Planning". But family planning does not have to include abortion. No where do they advertise that they are an abortion clinic. Which is the thrust of this bill.

I cannot fathom why a Catholic Charity cannot advertise themselves as Family planning, and not push abortion? Perhaps you can enlighten me on that. Why cant they assist with family planning and not advocate something that goes against their doctrine?

For that is the real question. No one is railing against the "Family planning" places that are trying to kill the family (as that what abortion means).

More PC attempts to control thought through language. In their minds "family planning" should only mean killing an unborn child and they want to control people's thoughts by banning any other (and more accurate) use of the verbage.
