Debate, and discuss, just dont Bore me.
Not Hardly

Occupy is starting up its antics again, and I felt it would be a good time to take a closer look at them.  They claim to represent the "99%", but a vast majority (not even just right wing Hillary) of the "99%" want nothing to do with them.  They also claim to be the new Hippies.  But I have not found too many old hippies that want anything to do with them either.

Why?

Taking a trip down memory lane, the hippies of the 60s and 70s were a fearful bunch.  Many feared for their lives (Vietnam).  Many feared what "the man" would do to them.  But most just feared growing up.  Not older - they all wanted to be 21 -29 (do not trust anyone over 30).

But for the most part they were also pretty harmless.  They were not the ones that blew up buildings (that was Obama's heroes).  For the most part, they were not spitting on the soldiers returning from Vietnam (That was the Clinton gang).

They were not angels, but neither were they demons.

But there was one thing that endeared them to me.  They created some of the greatest music of all time - and I am not talking about regular rock and roll.  Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Hair.  There were a lot of singles too that had very deeply religious themes.  I am sure they became best sellers due to the message of the hippies, but they were there.

And of course, my parents hate those musicals.  But I still love them.  I was never a hippy myself, I was more of the individual.  I had my tie dyed shirts, torn jeans and bandanas.  But I was too busy living life to "drop out".

Still, they had a positive impact on me.  Not necessarily what they believed, but in the strength of their convictions and the gentleness in which they approached it.

Contrast that with the occupy movement.  They are not singing about love and peace and hope and charity.  They are demanding hate, war (of the classes), no hope or charity.  They demand to be cared for - cradle to grave.  They become very violent when you disagree with them (not oppose them, just simple disagreement).  Their music is about "b*tches" and "hoes' and every 4 letter word in the language.

True hippies wanted nothing from you other than to live their life the way they wanted.  Occupy demands you live your life in servitude to them.  Real hippies talked about god and faith.  Occupy talks about hating religion, the oppression of religion, and how religion is to be destroyed.

Occupy is not the hippies of the 21st century.  Occupy is the criminal class that has been empowered to demand the care of a prison without the walls and restrictions.  They are not hippies.  They never will be.  Their sole source of news is violence.

Maybe I am just nostalgic and see my youth as somewhat more rosy than it really is.  But I will pop in my JC Superstar CD and be transported back to a time when religion was as important to those I had little in common with, as it was to me.  We had a bond.

There is no bond between occupy and most of America today.  There really is nothing good about them.

I am not so nostalgic about the hippies, I didn't identify the different sects, didn't even know there were any.  I do love the music, most of it.  The musicals, not so much.  An awful lot of the music of the time has become cliche today...we hear Zepplin in commercials selling cars and solid old blues licks selling viagra....but it still holds up...it is good stuff.

A lot of the music is now a late night commercial.  But still, those musicals still move me.  I was never a hippy (my sister was).  And for the most part, I had nothing to do with them.  They were not all peaches and cream.  Yet, they were PRODUCTIVE.  And for the most part, they were reverent.

OWS is none of those.  They are the leeches of society. They produce nothing, they merely consume and destroy.  The contrast between OWS and Hipppies is very similar to the contrast between the JFK/HHH democrats and the BHO/HRC democrats.

I guess I was running up against a different tribe of hippies, Doc.  I never found any redeeming qualities to them at all.

I also grew up during those times and, like you, love the music. But the hippies themselves? Not so much. For the most part I thought they were complete morons and in that respect I would say that yes, the "occupy" idiots are indeed the modern hippies. They are clueless idiots following a few catchy slogans that have no idea why they re doing what they are doing and are doing little more than using up air that would be better used by people who are actually capable of rational thought.

No doubt in my mind that they are the modern version of the stupid, clueless, and totally useless hippy.

Mason:  I think Doc feels like the hippies were more principled than the occupiers of today and in that sense I may agree, to an extent.  The extent that the kids of the sixties were sold a bill of goods by KGB plants and activists...oh wait...so have the occupiers!  Maybe they are more alike than Doc thinks.

I guess it was just waxing nostalgic.  Instead of redeeming, perhaps I should have said "less offensive".

The point I apparently missed, but was trying to make was that while the OWS is trying to portray themselves as the hippies of the 21st century, they miss on so many counts - their antagonism towards religion being one of the biggies.

A very well written comment (the whole thing).  And I will not argue your conclusion.  As I said to BFD, perhaps it is just nostalgia that made me see some redeeming qualities of the hippies of the 60/70s.

Reading your comments and Masons, I tend to agree with you more than Doc - he must be an idiot.
